Cancer fundraiser is personal for West graduate

Cancer is not something anyone thinks is something to laugh at. But at the same time it is said laughter is the best medicine.

So, with that philosophy in mind, Allie Marisi, a 2013 graduate from Cranston High School West and the Medical Pathways Program of the Cranston Area Career and Technical Center, is hosting a special fundraiser for the American Cancer Society with Charlie Hall’s Ocean State Follies at the Santa Maria di Prata Society in Cranston on Thursday, June 29.

Allie’s roots are firmly planted in Cranston as she attended George J. Peters Elementary School and Western Hills Middle School. Her family is still in Cranston.

Marisi is a recent 2017 graduate from Southern Connecticut State University. She attended school there for four years and received a Bachelor of Science in Public Health.

“As a senior in the Public Health program at Southern, I had to complete a semester-long internship. I choose to work at the American Cancer Society in Rocky Hill, Connecticut,” she said.

Throughout her internship she was told about the Fundraising/Participant Outbound Call Specialist because the job tasks were similar to her internship tasks.

“This event is something that I am working very hard on because breast cancer is a topic that I am passionate about. It is a current hot topic in the health field. And this event is personal to my family and I because my mother lost her grandmother and mother to this disease. She lost her mother six weeks before she married my dad. She as well as the rest of my family and I are very passionate about supporting the American Cancer Society because of all the amazing work they do for the people suffering from some type of cancer,” she said.

Allie also included her close family friend, Sherry, as a cancer survivor as another reason for the fundraiser.

Marisi is focused on making her first event a true success not just in terms of fundraising, but also in cancer awareness.

“We have lost some pretty amazing people who fought really hard to overcome this disease. The success of this event means everything to me because we are donating to a great organization that works hard to help those directly affected by this disease. ACS helps people suffering from this disease as well as honoring the survivors, the people who have passed, the patients undergoing treatment, their families, and their caregivers. Anyone that attends this event will be considered a hero to that list of people because they are providing them with hope for a better future, a chance to celebrate more birthdays, and helping us get one step closer to a world without breast cancer,” she said.

As of now, she hopes to continue her relationship with ACS.

“In the future, I hope to stay working closely with the American Cancer Society. I want to help all the people I can that are suffering from this disease. I look forward to being around when we complete one of the missions of this organization which is having a world without breast cancer,” she said.

Tickets are $50 and include dinner by Ralph's Catering located in Cranston and the show by Charlie Hall and the Ocean State Follies. No tickets will be sold at the door. Contact Allie Marisi at 595-0875 or Alliemarisi@yahoo.com.
