The CCRI Knights baseball team traveled to Worcester, Mass. to face off with the Quinsigamond Community College Wyverns last week when a 12-run fifth inning clinched victory for the Knights as they won the game 15-2 in five innings. The win improved CCRI’s record to 16-10 overall, 11-1 in Region XXI play and 10-1 in League play.
CCRI looked the better the results of the first meeting with Quinsigamond back on March 24 where both teams took one win away from the weekend doubleheader. The Knights came out hot, scoring three runs in the top of the first. The score would stay at 3-0 until the bottom of the fourth when the Wyverns scored two runs to cut CCRI’s lead to 3-2. The Knights would then score a whopping 12 runs in the fifth inning and then shutout Quinsigamond in the bottom half to win the game 15-2 in five innings.
CCRI’s pitching matched the dominance of the offense as starting pitcher, freshman Cristian Woods (East Providence, RI) allowed just four hits and two runs through five innings. Woods added three strikeouts to his performance and helped give the offense the opening they needed to pull away from the Wyverns.
The Knights offence was led by freshman David Meech (Douglas, MA) batting 2-4 with his first collegiate homerun and a single and added a team leading four RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore Joey Barter (Coventry, RI) went 3-4 at the plate with a double, two singles, two RBI and a run scored. Sophomore co-captain Zack Odsen (Providence, RI) batted in three runs while going 1-4 at the plate with a single and two runs scored. Sophomore co-captain Nick D’Ambra (Coventry, RI) batted 2-3 with a triple and a single along with three runs scored and one RBI. Freshman Alejandro Martinez (Cranston, RI) was 1-3 on the day, a single with two RBI and a run scored. sophomore Kyle McCann (Coventry, RI) went 2-3, two singles, one RBI and a run scored. Freshman Anthony Ramos (Cranston, RI) rounded off the hitting as he batted 1-2, a double with three runs scored.
