Chafee predicts Brown will be next governor of RI

Posted

Former governor Lincoln Chafee said Monday that he thinks Democratic candidate Matt Brown “is going to be the next governor of Rhode Island.”

He also criticized governor Gina Raimondo for deciding, as of press time Monday, not to participate in any of the scheduled debates happening this week and next before the Democratic primary takes place.

“It’s inconceivable that voters won’t have the chance to hear all candidates debate the important issues,” Chafee said in a conference call with reporters.

Chafee didn’t hold back on criticisms of Raimondo’s time in office, saying that she might be avoiding a debate so she doesn’t have to discuss issues including “hedge fund investments, Cooler and Warmer, lawyers, UHIP, truck tolls, 195 traffic jams or the Burrillville power plant.”

Matt Brown encouraged Raimondo to change her mind and take to the airwaves in the four debates scheduled. Those include a WPRI debate Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. that will be broadcast on Fox Providence, a WPRO debate at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, an NBC debate at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 5 at 7:00 p.m., and a Rhode Island Public Radio debate during four different morning slots on Sept. 7.

“She suggested that debating wouldn’t be good for her strategy, but I urge her to remember the campaign isn’t about her or me, it’s about the voters of Rhode Island, and they deserve to hear a debate from the two candidates who are running to lead the state,” Brown added.

Chafee said that the “vast majority of Rhode Islanders” are either Democrats or Independents, and therefore can take part in the upcoming primary, which is why he believes these debates to be so important.

“Voters make up their minds based on debates,” he said. “I’ve never refused a debate.”

YES, but you didn't ask him if the Queen of Raimondi is a "cocky-whacko" like Palin.
