Pawtuxet Wedding Stroll

Salon KG in Pawtuxet will be hosting its third annual Wedding Stroll on April 1 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The salon is located at 2144 Broad St. in Cranston. There is no rain date for this event. Brides and grooms are welcome to attend, free of charge, and see what Pawtuxet Village and vendors have to offer. Brides will be receiving a map from Salon KG. Those who visit all the wedding professionals listed and bring the completed map back will be entered to win a raffle worth thousands. There will also be a fashion show throughout the village. No registration is required, but all participants should stop at Salon KG for their map and further directions.

Summer jobs

The Parks and Recreation Department will make summer job applications available in the office and online from April 3 to May 5. Completed applications can be delivered to the Recreation Office, 1090 Cranston St., 2nd Floor, during normal business hours. Applicants must be 16 years old at the time of employment and be a Cranston resident. Positions available include playground counselor, lifeguard, pool attendant and pool maintenance.

Comedy Night to benefit MS Dream Center

On April 2 at 5 p.m. a Comedy Night featuring PJ Thibodeau and Stephen Donovan to benefit the MS Dream Center at the Cranston Country Club. Tickets are $35 per person and buffet-style pasta, salad, half-roasted chicken and vegetable will be served. Purchase tickets online at www.msdreamcenter.org or call Anne at 330-7470.

Citizen’s Police Academy

Beginning on April 4 and for 10 consecutive Tuesday nights at 6 p.m., the Cranston Police Department will conduct their Citizen’s Police Academy. This program is for citizens who want to know more about the police department and how it operates. It will provide a hands-on learning experience about patrol tactics, detective investigations, BCI, Canine and more.

Pink Heals Ball

Tickets are selling fast for the sixth annual Pink Heals Ball to be held on April 22 at the Crowne Plaza Grand Ballroom beginning at 6 p.m., with dinner served at 6:45 p.m. Meal choices are boneless chicken, baked scrod, prime rib, or vegetarian. Tickets are $50 per person/$55 for prime rib dinner. It will be an evening of dinner, dancing, and fun and music. Support Pink Heals as it supports women with cancer around the state. People and Pet Pictures with Easter Bunny

Defenders of Animals will sponsor their annual People and Pet Pictures with the Easter Bunny on April 2 beginning at noon through 3 p.m. at the Warwick Animal Hospital, located at 1950 Elmwood Ave., Warwick, RI. A donation of $10 per picture is requested to benefit Defenders of Animals.

The 15th Annual Tomorrow Fund Stroll

The Tomorrow Fund 15th Annual Stroll is taking place on April 2 at 10 a.m. beginning at the Garden City Center Gazebo in Cranston.

The Tomorrow Fund is a non-profit organization located in Rhode Island that provides daily financial and emotional support to children with cancer and their families who are treated in The Tomorrow Fund Clinic located in the Edwin Forman Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Center at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence, RI.  Kids can come from anywhere in the world but they must be treated in our pediatric oncology program at Hasbro to receive our services.

Children, adults and families are welcome to collect pledges and “stroll” on behalf of The Tomorrow Fund.  A minimum donation of $20 per walker or team member is required.

Check-in and Registration begins at 8:45 a.m. “Tomorrow Fund Stroll” t-shirts will be distributed to participants on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Strolling begins at 10 a.m. and participants can walk as few or as many laps around the shopping center as they wish.  Refreshments and entertainment including face painters, clowns and music are just some of the activities planned.  Trophies will be awarded to the Team and the Individual raising the most funds.

At the Senior Center

 

Book Club will meet on March 28 at 10:30 a.m. and will feature “Born Free” by Joy Adamson. This book describes the author’s experiences raising a lion cub, Elsa, and the author’s story of Elsa in transition between the captivity in which she is raised and the fearsome wild to which she is returned.

The New Hope Art Gallery, “Spring Show Opening”, will be held on March 28 from 4 to 7 p.m. There will be over 300 art pieces featured including digital, drawing, mixed media, painting, photography, and sculpture from over 50 local artists.

General Health 101 will be the topic on March 29 at 10 a.m. This program is provided by Rehab Hospital of R.I. This presentation will touch on our overall general health including hygiene and nutrition.  Two areas so very important for our everyday good health.

The Providence Civic Orchestra will hold a free concert at the Cranston Senior Enrichment Center on March 31 from 1 to 2 p.m. The Providence Civic Orchestra, under the direction of Vito A. Saritelli, is a group of talented and dedicated senior musicians. Each year they play before hundreds of people of all ages.  Their program includes music from the classics, operettas, “pop” favorites, and patriotic sing-alongs. 

Laughter Yoga will be held on April 2 at 1 p.m. Laughter Yoga? If you have never heard of it you are missing out.  It is one of the most stress-free hours you will spend.  Come and participate with Larry, a certified Yoga Laughter Instructor…it will make you feel like a new person.

Mark Your Calendar – Register early for a four-part wellness series which will introduce you to alternative treatments available to help manage stress, anxiety, strains and pains. This program will be held on the following Wednesdays at 1 p.m.: April 5 Benefits of Acupressure, April 12 Techniques to Overcome Back Problems, April 19 Exploring Functional Nutrition and April 26 Prayer, Meditation, Mantras & Chanting. Screening & Discussion of Documentary ‘13th’

The Cranston Public Library will be providing a free screening of the Academy Award-nominated documentary 13th at the William Hall Library on March 30 at 6 p.m.

Following the screening, a community conversation will be led by a panel of guest speakers including James Vincent (President, NAACP Providence Branch), Jennifer Magaw (Rhode Island ACLU Board Member), Vanessa Flores-Maldonado (STEP UP Network) and Professor Leslie Grinner (Rhode Island College, Gender and Women’s Studies Program).

“13th”, directed by Ava DuVernay (Selma), powerfully explores racial inequity in the United States by charting the path from slavery to modern mass incarceration.  The documentary, released in October 2016 by Netflix, was recently made available for free public screenings by the streaming service.

Free tree program is being offered again

Free shade trees are available to Cranston residents under this municipality's 2017 Neighborhood Set- Back Tree Planting Program while supplies last. The 10' tall saplings must be planted on private property (behind the sidewalk). They will be furnished and installed by a contractor at no cost to the homeowner. Cranston Historical Society's 3rd Annual Victorian Tea

The Cranston Historical Society's 3rd Annual Victorian Tea will be held on April 2 at the Governor Sprague Mansion from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Historical interpreter, Patricia Perry, will present a delightful talk: "The Laundry Basket,” to include items that would be found in early laundry baskets, like corsets, crinolines, long johns, shirts fronts. CHS will also have on display from their collection, rarely shown undergarments, linens and irons.

Cost is $30 per person payable to Cranston Historical Society, 1351 Cranston St., Cranston 02920. Reservations encouraged due to seating which is limited. A few tables for a group of 8 are still available. Call 944-9226.

Community Health & Safety Fair

There will be a Community Health & Safety Fair, presented by the Family Center/Coz at George J. Peters School, 15 Mayberry St. on April 26 from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Please come and join in with more than a dozen vendors and everyone that registers for ride your bike to school day will receive a raffle ticket to be entered to win a new bike.

It’s Prom Time at CCAP

Prom Time is a program in which donated prom dresses, tuxedos and accessories are offered free of charge to teens in CCAP’s Youth Center Programs.

CCAP’s Operation Prom Dress has over 400 new or gently used dresses and a limited number of tuxedos (various sizes), along with accessories for Prom Time.

Dresses and tuxedos are available on a first-come, first-served basis and you must be registered in a CCAP Youth Center Program to participate.

West Bay Chorale fundraiser

West Bay Café will host a fundraiser to support the West Bay Chorale. Fun for all ages. Entertainment by local artists. The event will be on April 8 and will be held at the Edgewood Congregational Church, 1788 Broad Street, Cranston, RI.
