2nd Annual NBC Channel 10 Volley for Buddies

The 2nd annual NBC Channel 10 Volley for Buddies will take place this Labor Day weekend (Sept. 1-3) at Mulligan's Island in Cranston.

Starting at Midnight on Friday, Sept. 1 and running until midnight on Sunday, Sept. 3, this 48-hour marathon volleyball event is one-of-a-kind.

You can register today with your friends and family to play in 6-hour blocks. There are a bunch of spaces open from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday! Only $20 to play and you will receive a tee shirt. Visit bestbuddies.org/rhodeisland for more information.

Job Training for Community Kitchen Program

The Rhode Island Community Food Bank is now accepting applications for its free, 14-week Community Kitchen Program, a culinary job training program for adults 18 years and older.  Beginning in September, the program prepares participants for entry-level jobs in the restaurant and food service industry through training in basic cooking skills, food service operations, ServSafe procedures, first aid, safety and life skills.

Students also participate in unpaid internships to expand their skills and help prepare them for permanent employment. Graduates receive a certificate for completing 400 hours of training. Assistance in job placement is provided.

CCAP Chip for Charity 9 Hole Golf Tournament

The 2017 CCAP Chip for Charity 9 Hole Golf Tournament & Community Awards Dinner - honoring their Community Partners - Senator Jack Reed, Mutual of America and The Rotary Club of Cranston will be held on Sept. 14 at Harbor Lights, in Warwick Neck. Neighborhood Health of Rhode Island is the Chip Charity presenting sponsor. Color and Calm

Every Friday at the Auburn library for adults will be held Color and Calm from 4:30 to 5:45 for a relaxing start to the weekend. Library provides coloring books, mandalas, colored pencils and markers. Soothing music and herbal and decaf teas. No reservations required.

Craftbash

Families welcome to join us for free crafts at Artists' Exchange on the last Saturday of every month. On Aug. 26 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., build a clay cup and travel through time and space in history to learn how they would have been decorated by the ancient artisans. This event is free and open to the public. Artists’ Exchange is located at 50 Rolfe Square.

Looking for crafters

Spring Green Memorial Church is looking for Crafters to participate in an Indoor/Outdoor Craft and Yard Sale to be held on Saturday, September 9 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tables and spaces are available for a donation of $25 each. New members welcome to West Bay Chorale

The West Bay Chorale will begin rehearsals on Sept. 11.  At this time, we welcome any new members who are interested in joining our singing group.  No auditions necessary.  If you have the love for music and are looking to share that talent, then The West Bay Chorale is the place to be. A Mobile Manicure Spa - More Than Just Pretty Nails will be at the Cranston Senior Center to pamper. On Thursdays, from 9 a.m. to noon, getting a manicure is a nice routine and it is even nicer when it is coming to you here at the center! Sarah, our manicurist, will be with us on Thursdays throughout July from 9 a.m. to noon.  For only $7 you will have the opportunity to enjoy a standard manicure. By appointment only please call now at 780-6216.

Chronic Disease Self-Management Program will be held from Aug. 25 through Sept. 29 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Back by popular demand…this Living Well Rhode Island program is free for individuals who may have a chronic condition, are at risk of developing one or simply want to improve their quality of life.  This evidence-based education workshop teaches us how to manage symptoms of a chronic condition (pain, arthritis, diabetes, high blood pressure etc.), relieve stress, eat well, exercise, and how to realistically set attainable goals.  Upon successfully completing the program (attending 5 of the 6 sessions) participants will receive a workbook, a relaxation CD and a $20 gift certificate.  Space is limited please register early by calling 780-6000.

CPR & Other Emergencies will be covered during “New CPR Techniques” on Aug. 23 at 10 a.m. with facilitator Joseph Simas, RI Med Cert. Crucial steps we should know when it comes to CPR.  There are new resuscitation guidelines – what are they and why the change?

Don’t Be Scammed will be presented on Aug. 24 at 10 a.m. and will be presented by the Attorney General’s Office. Join a representative from the Attorney General’s Office to find out about the latest scams and how to protect yourself from being swindled.  Also, if you or someone you know have been the victim of a scam, learn how the Attorney General’s Office can assist you.

Mayor’s Annual Picnic will be held on Aug. 25 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Brayton Avenue Park with a suggested donation of $3 per person.  Come join your friends for a fun time filled with entertainment, games and great food! BBQ Chicken, Hot Dogs, Salad, Corn & what would a picnic be without Watermelon?  Reservations are required. Call 780-6134 or stop by the Center’s dining room between 9 and 11:30 and make your reservation.

Arthritis Foundation Walk With Ease Program will begin with Orientation on Sept. 18 at 10 a.m. Program begins Monday, Sept. 25 on Mondays, Wednesday & Fridays at 9:30 a.m. at the Cranston High School West Track. Need relief from arthritis pain or just want to be active? This walking program can teach you how to safely make physical activity part of your everyday life.  Great fun walking with others three mornings a week.  Meet at the track or take Transvan from the center.  To register call 780-6000.

2017 Senior Games - “Fitness for the Body & Mind” will begin with Opening Ceremonies at the Center on Sept. 23 at 9 a.m. Join in for a week of fun and sport!  The Senior Games provide seniors 55 and older, throughout the state and beyond, the opportunity to compete in events including billiards, bocce, bowling, golf, horseshoes, and much more. Registration fee $20, which includes continental breakfast, lunch buffet, and an awards banquet.  Call 401-780-6000 to register. Golf will be held Sept. 19, 20 and 21at the Cranston Country Club. Your child and you may be eligible for a Free Early Education Program

CCAP's Head Start /Early Head Start Programs are recruiting children from birth to 5 years old. Bright futures for children begin with great child care both at home and away.

Head Start is a free federally funded program serving income eligible children and families and a free federally funded program serving Foster Children. It also provides comprehensive services for pregnant women, infants and toddlers, three to four-year olds and children who missed the Kindergarten age mandate. Services are offered to children with Special Needs, free breakfast and lunch is provided, Parent Engagement Opportunities, extended daycare services offered for parents who are working or in school and priority is given to families experiencing homelessness.

CCAP offers programs for children and their parents that focus on early childhood education and development, mental and physical health, safety, nutrition, family engagement, and parenting.

Their Head Start programs promote school readiness by enhancing the social and cognitive development of children through the provision of educational, health, nutritional, social and other services to enrolled children and families. They engage parents in their children's learning and help them in making progress toward their educational, literacy and employment goals. In search of Cranston history

The Cranston Historical Society is always so grateful to the good people of our city who allow us to borrow old pictures of Cranston schools, activities, businesses, parades, landscape photos, farm pictures, etc. that show Cranston's rich history, civics and industry. Help make a house a home

The Furniture Bank of RI, a 501(C)3 non-profit corporation, needs bureaus, complete twin or double beds, kitchen sets, mattresses and other household furniture that you no longer need. To help a less fortunate family through your charitable donation of good used furniture, call 831-5511 to arrange for pick up. All donated articles must be in good condition.

Yard Sale to benefit Defenders of Animals

A large yard sale will be held at the Warwick Animal Hospital on Aug. 26, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Warwick Animal Hospital (back parking lot), 1950 Elmwood Avenue, Warwick. Proceeds to benefit Defenders of Animals.

Defenders of Animals and the Warwick Animal Hospital work together assisting pet owners and stray animals with medical emergencies and routine medical care. When funds are available, Defenders of Animals will assist pet owners financially when they can’t afford medical treatment or their pets.
