City summer jobs applications date announced

The Parks and Recreation Department will make available summer job applications from April 2 to May 4. Applications will be available for download on the Parks and Recreation website and for pick up at the Recreation Office. Applicants must Cranston Resident and be 16 years old at the time of employment. Forms should be submitted to the Parks and Recreation Department. Positions include camp counselor, lifeguard, pool attendant, pool maintenance.

This is for new applicants only. Last year's summer employees in good standing with the department will receive a re-application form in the mail in the coming weeks. Western Cranston Garden Club

Western Cranston Garden Club open meeting welcomes visitors Tuesday, April 10 at the Shepherd of the Valley Church, 604 Seven Mile Road (off Scituate Avenue) Hope. Barbara Blossom, President of the Bayberry Garden Club, Warren/Bristol, and National Accredited Garden Club Judge and Award Winning Designer and Demonstrator, will present “New Rules/Old Tricks.” Guest fee is $5. Refreshments will be served.

Cranston Hall of Fame deadline approaches

The Cranston Hall of Fame is looking for submissions for the 38th class of inductees. Deadline for submissions is April 18. The Induction ceremony will take place on Nov. 2. All details about how to nominate a candidate and facts about the Hall of Fame can be found at www.cpsed.net, under the community tab.

Deadline approaching for Cranston Police Citizen’s Academy

Are you interested in learning about law enforcement? If you answered "yes" then the Cranston Police Citizens' Academy may be for you. One night a week for approximately two months, the CPD Training Division will provide this unique opportunity to a limited number of people. If accepted, you will take part in classroom presentations and have the chance to participate in police scenario training. Through these experiences and classroom conversations, you will gain a better understanding of law enforcement.

To be considered, you must be at least 18 years old and must complete the electronic registration form. Upon completion, you will be contacted by a member of the Cranston Police Training Division. Applications are being accepted through March 30 and the academy is scheduled to be held each Tuesday from April 17 through June 12. Registration forms can be found at cranstonpoliceri.com.

Cranston Celebrates Cambodian Culture

On April 7 at 1 to 3 p.m., The Cranston Public Library and the Center for Southeast Asians have teamed up to bring awareness to Cambodian culture as part of the kick off National Library Week. The event will include a ceremonial blessing, refreshments, and the unveiling of the library’s newest bilingual book collection. The Central Library is at 140 Sockanosset Cross Road. Speakers will include Edward Garcia, Library Director; Kannyka Pouk, Director of Programs at CSEA and Mayor Allan Fung. The event’s purpose is to acknowledge the growing Cambodian population in Rhode Island while inviting new Rhode Island residents to the Cranston Public Library in the hopes they will use it as a future resource or safe space. This event is free and open to the public.

Historical cemetery restoration and awareness

On April 14 at 9 a.m. at Oakland Cemetery join in to Celebrate RI House Resolution #7203 designating April 14 across the state as Historic Cemetery Restoration and Awareness Day which will be celebrated across the state. The City Historic Cemetery Commissions are sponsoring a visit to the historic Oakland Cemetery, located at 1569 Broad St. They will share with you what they do to help preserve and document all historic cemeteries in Cranston.

Mayor Allan Fung will give the greetings from the City of Cranston along with other special guests at 9 a.m. and cleanup will begin right after. Please bring work gloves, rakes, clippers or other tools to help with the clean-up and if you represent a group, please wear your organization/company identifiable shirt or hat. CPL Book Sale seeking donations

Got books? They need your help with the Cranston Public Library Association's May 5 book sale. Help them to continue this tradition by donating your gently-used (and mildew-free) items to the sale. They are currently accepting donations of books (especially nonfiction books), CDs and LPs, and DVDs during regular business hours at the Central Library and William Hall Library. They are unable to accept magazines, VHS tapes, textbooks, or encyclopedias.

Temple Sinai Trivia Night

The event will be held on April 7 at 6:30 p.m. with a light supper with a variety of delicious veggie pizzas, calzones and salad will be available at that time and throughout the evening. Dessert and coffee will be served around 8 p.m. The event is BYOB. Babysitting is available.

The trivia master will begin the game at 7 p.m. He is an experienced professional who has equipment with a big screen on which to display the questions which are mostly in the category of general knowledge.

Friendly competition is one element of this enjoyable game. Of course, you get points for correct answers, but there is a twist: you have points deducted for incorrect answers. You might be in first place one minute, and, just a few minutes later, you get the next question wrong and you will be in last place. Lots of fun.

Tickets are $15 prior to April 3 and $20 after that date or at the door. If you have a team of eight and provide advance payment for each team member, you can reserve a table. If you do not have a team of eight, you will be seated wherever you choose, and your random table mates will become your team.

A night of dinner and comedy for St. Mary’s Church

The Regina Coeli Society of St. Mary Church is hosting a Dinner and Comedy show on April 14 at 7 p.m.at the Feast Society Hall on Phenix Ave. The Italian dinner is being catered. A “divine” comedy of belly laughs, blessings, Blarney and Bingo will be presented by David Kane in the role of Father Patrick Aloysius Misgivings.

There will be stories and one-liners from miracles and marriage to bazaars. This hilarious interactive comedy includes a collection, a raffle and an actual bingo game. Tickets are $35 per person and will be sold at all Masses April 7 and 8. All parishioners and their guests are invited to join in. For additional, information and tickets please call 944-7323.

The Michael A. Traficante Enrichment Center, located at 1070 Cranston St. will offer the following programs and activities:

Arthritis Foundation will present the “Walk With Ease” Program entitled “Take Control, One Step at a Time” on April 17 at 10:30 a.m. with Orientation. The program will be held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 to 10 a.m. The program begins April 23 ends June 1. Need relief from arthritis pain or just want to be more active? Bone Builders of RI, sponsored by The Village at Waterman Lake Mondays and Fridays 1-2 p.m. Suggested donation is $2. This innovative community-based program is designed to promote bone health and overall well-being for both men and women. Research has shown that moderate free-weight training performed at least twice a week for six months can improve strength and balance, and increase energy levels, while significantly increasing bone density. The class ifs offered twice a week here at the Center. You are welcomed to stop by, bring a friend and sit in on a class to see if it is for you.

New Hope Art Gallery Spring Show

The New Hope Art Gallery Spring Show opening is scheduled for Tuesday, March 27 from 4 to 7:30 p.m. The show will feature 400 pieces of art in every style and media from 100 local, national, senior, special needs and student artists.

The will feature vender tables of small original art items all at affordable prices from many of our artists. Also featured will be wonderful music from Jim Chapin, Mark Greenwood, Robert Rizzo and friends. Artist Jack Lai will be creating free portraits for guests. Come join in for a great night of beautiful art, great music and good food. The gallery is located at the Michael A. Trafficante Enrichment Center (Senior Center) at 1070 Cranston St. This show will run for 3 months until early July. Regular gallery hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
