Clean is theme as Dave's prepares to open first Cranston store

There’s one word that gets a lot of use at Dave’s Marketplace: “clean.”

That was evident Tuesday during an impromptu visit to the Dave’s Marketplace on Pontiac Avenue that opens this week. A ribbon cutting will be held Thursday at 9 a.m. and the place, the former Seabra, will be in full swing by Friday.

Bob Fabiano, director of store development and former Cranston resident, played tour guide Tuesday morning as crews put finishing touches to the 25,000-square-foot store. Potted flowers lined the outside of the store, while inside produce was being transferred from boxes to displays, shelves were being stocked and finishing touches were being made to behind-the-counter areas.

“You’re not going to see anything like this in most supermarkets,” Fabiano said as he navigated behind a lineup of empty delicatessen displays and through a pair of swinging doors. He faced a bank of stoves that looked like they had just come out of the box.

“It’s a full kitchen,” he said proudly.

Prepared foods have become a specialty of Dave’s, and the company’s first Cranston store will feature everything from their own meatloaf, to mashed potatoes, wide assortment of chicken dishes, fried rice, pot roast and fish dishes. The Cranston store also offers a feel of a store within a store with areas distinctly identified for prepared foods, baked goods and produce. Dairy products fill cases below a pastoral wall scene that gives that section of the store a unique feel.

Fabiano’s tour includes the bakery with a walk-in oven resembling a bank vault. While the heat has yet to be cranked up, bakery manager Courtney Cataloni is busily making preparations, lining up equipment and polishing work areas.

Around from the bakery is a walk-in dairy products storage room. Fabiano rolls back the door to reveal a brightly lit room filled with product.

The freezer, which is equally large, if not larger, is next. The cold air blasts. Beyond the plastic ribbons that serve to contain the chilly environment are boxes of product to supply the retail freezer cases that have already been stocked.

Fabiano points to the floor.

“We’re clean freaks,” he says.

He explains at considerable added expense, the floors were given an epoxy coating that not only makes for easier cleaning but also dramatically reduces the chance for the growth of bacteria.

“That’s what we’re known for, clean, clean, clean,” he says.

Of course a trip to Dave’s wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the restrooms.

Are the Cranston store facilities anything like those at the Hoxsie store following its extensive renovations?

“Come look,” says Fabiano leading the way.

He knocks repeatedly before pushing open the door to the ladies room to reveal walls decorated with scenes of tropical beaches. You could be in a fancy hotel.

Across the way is the men’s room with its sports theme with pictures of famed players.

Could Dave’s be carrying things a bit too far?

Fabiano thinks not.

“We like to give customers the best experience,” he says.
