Cranston Arts Commission Kick Off Event
The newly formed Cranston Arts Commission invites all Cranston residents to join them for their “Kick Off Event” on Feb. 1 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Theatre 82 & Character’s Cafe at 82 Rolfe Square, Cranston. The purpose of the event is to gather people together who are interested in developing a strong Cranston Arts community. The mission of the Cranston Arts Commission is to nurture the celebration of life through art by fostering a diverse community that supports creative expression.
Feel free to drop in and meet & chat with Cranston Arts Commission members along with other local artists. Share your ideas about strengthening the arts in Cranston. Get involved with other local musicians, theatrical and visual artists. This is a free event.

BlumShapiro, the largest regional accounting and business consulting firm in New England, announced this morning the election of a new partner in the firm’s Rhode Island office. Congratulations to Cranston resident Patrick B. McAssey, CPA, who was elected partner in BlumShapiro’s Accounting & Auditing Department in Cranston. He joined the firm in 2013 through a merger with Sullivan & Company.
Having over 25 years of public accounting experience, McAssey is well versed in performing financial statement audits as well as single audits for the firm’s non-profit and healthcare clients.
On Jan. 26, Cranston author Mary Jane Bohlen will be reading from her book “Bosom Buddies” at “The Elephant Room, Schastea” in Pawtuxet Village. The event begins at 6:30 and ends by 8:30 p.m.
“Bosom Buddies” is a collection of photographs of breast cancer survivors and their essays, poetry and comments about their journey. Bohlen is a two-time breast cancer survivor. The Elephant serves tea and delicious crepes of all sorts. The event is called LIVELY LITERATI and is sponsored by ARIA, The Association of Rhode Island Authors, a group of over 300 authors and is held the last Thursday of every month.

On Jan. 28 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Cranston Y will be hosting an Open House for those interested in learning more about what a Y membership can do for your family. Staff will be available for tours and to answer questions. Those with Blue Chip for Medicare are encouraged to come in and learn about the special plan available through Blue Cross that could make memberships as little as $5. Cranston Senior Services Membership Drive 2017 is already underway at the Cranston Senior Enrichment Center. Anyone 55 years or older may join. Renewal and new memberships are welcome. Alzheimer’s Disease/Dementia will be discussed during “Difference Between Dementia & Alzheimer’s Disease” on Jan. 25 at 10 a.m. This program will be presented by the URI Pharmacy Outreach Program. Many people often confuse the terms Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia. Although they are used interchangeably, there are distinct differences between them. At this session, you will learn what they are.

Chronic Disease Self-Management Workshop “Living Well Rhode Island” will be held on Fridays, beginning Feb. 24 and ending March 31, at 9 to 11:30 a.m. This is a free six-week program for p0eople living with chronic conditions including, but not limited to arthritis, cancer, chronic pain, diabetes, heart disease, COPD to name just a few. Topics include dealing with pain; fatigue and frustration; improving strength; flexibility and endurance; medications and nutrition; making informed decisions; and setting goals to improve health and lifestyle. Upon successfully completing this program each participant will receive a workbook, a relaxation CD and a gift certificate. Space is limited so register now by calling 780-6000.

Cranston RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) is conducting a cell phone recycling campaign. There’s nothing to buy. We are simply asking you to help protect the environment by donating your used cell phone(s).
Your donation will be used to help the community by providing much needed emergency communications to seniors and victims of abuse through the 911 Cell Phone Bank Program. These emergency cell phones are provided at no charge. Your donation will help keep up with the increasing demand. You can drop off your old cell phones at the Cranston Senior Enrichment Center, located at 1070 Cranston St., Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The first inauguration, that of George Washington, took place on April 30, 1789. All subsequent (regular) inaugurations from 1793 until 1933, were held on March 4, the day of the year on which the federal government began operations under the U.S. Constitution in 1789. The exception to this pattern being those years when March 4 fell on a Sunday.
When it did, the public inauguration ceremony would take place on Monday, March 5. This happened on four occasions, in 1821, 1849, 1877 and 1917. Inauguration Day moved to January 20, beginning in 1937, following ratification of the Twentieth Amendment to the Constitution, where it has remained since.
