The RI Dream Center will be holding a Day of Hopes and Dreams on May 19 beginning at 8:00 a.m. There will be a 5K run/walk and an Artisan Market. The event will be held rain or shine. The registration fee is $25 for all adult participants. All race participants and their supporters are invited to attend this event.
The Artisan Market will open at 8:00 a.m. at Western Hills Middle School on Phenix Ave in Cranston. Artisans from all around RI will be selling their homemade products. Come help support the small businesses in our community. If you would like to be a vendor at this event, please contact Sharon Cogean at sharon.cogean00 a.m. The first 100 registrants will receive an inaugural finisher's medal.
The Rhode Island Dream Center is an approved 501c3 non-profit agency that focuses on helping families and individuals in Rhode Island that are in need. All proceeds will benefit the RI Dream Center's many programs. Their programs include providing education, food, clothing, self-esteem building, spiritual 13-step program and much more. Rehearsals continue to be very productive as the West Bay Chorale approaches their upcoming concert, “Love Change Everything,” on Sunday, May 20 at 3 p.m., at the Edgewood Congregational Church, 1788 Broad St. in Cranston. Their featured selections include the beautiful Brahms Liebeslieder Waltzes along with various Broadway Love Songs from well- known productions such as Les Misérables, Wicked, The Sound of Music, and many more. This will all be under the direction of our very dedicated and enthusiastic director Eric W. Van Devort. Admission is $12 for adults, $6 for children 12 and under. Children 5 and under are free. Tickets may be purchased from one of our chorale members, on our website, or at the door the day of the performance. Defenders of Animals will host their Annual May Breakfast on May 6 at Sprague Mansion, located at 1351 Cranston St. The donation fee is $25 per person and the event begins at 10 a.m. 100 percent of the profits go directly to Defenders of Animals’ emergency care and spay/neuter fund. The 13th Annual Katie Lavey Memorial Blood Drive will be held on Tuesday, May 8 at Park View Middle School. The drive will be held from 12:30 to 6 p.m. Since the inception of this drive over 550 pints of blood have been collected. According to the RI Blood Center, 1 pint of blood donated can save three lives.
Katie Lavey of Cranston did not even get to graduate from Cranston High School East. She passed away in 2005, at the age of 16, after a routine surgery. It was a shock to the entire family and to the Park View and Cranston East community as well. Lavey was just about to enter her senior year at East, yet never got the chance. Remember Katie has been a mission of her mother, Laurie Lavey, who has taken Katie’s memory to heart and to the community. The Lavey Memorial Blood Drive is open to the public. Coordinated by John Macera, a Health and Physical Education Teacher at Park View, the Lavey Memorial Blood Drive has been instrumental in memorializing Katie, a past student at Park View.
Katie Lavey was active in Edgewood Softball, St. Paul’s Church which also hosts Katie’s Kids, where the sisters of Notre Dame assist AIDS orphaned children with uniforms and school supplies in Africa. There is also a Katie Lavey Memorial Scholarship program which is granted based on community involvement within the Edgewood Softball League.

On May 5, there will be a twist on a tradition wedding show as the Pawtuxet Wedding Stroll kicks in their fifth and final walking fashion show throughout the village with dress provided by Spark Bridal and tuxedo provided by Aldo's House of Formals. Come check out all the local wedding professionals and get entered to win a huge raffle basket. Admission is free, and all are welcome to attend. Bring your friends, parents, or significant other.

Each store or vendor will checkmark that you have visited and then return to Salon KG with your completed map and be entered to win a wedding raffle basket, totaling more than $3,000 worth of goods, discounts and services. The Wedding Stroll is held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will spotlight wedding professionals and village businesses. Perfect for brides, grooms, wedding party, parents, family and friends.
On May 19, the Cranston Police Public Safety Day will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Texas Roadhouse parking lot, located at 99 Garfield Ave. The event is sponsored by the Cranston Police Department, OneCranston and the Substance Abuse Task Force. On hand will be the Cranston Police K-9 unit, police bikes, children’s obstacle course, Andy the Armadillo, police cars, face painting and more. This is a free event. On Saturday, May 5 from 2 to 4 p.m., local Lego artist Andy Grover will be at the William Hall Library. Grover has created detailed Lego models of Aldrich and Gorton Junior High Schools which will be on display. At 3 p.m. join him for a presentation and Q&A session on his models. The Cranston Rotary will present Touch a Truck at the Garden City Center Gazebo on May 6 from 9 a.m. to noon. Bring the children so they can see, touch, climb on and explore their favorite big trucks and vehicles which will include police, fire safety, military and construction vehicles. There will also be face painting and plenty of crafts. Suggested donation of $10 per family which will support the work of the Cranston Rotary in the community.
The Cranston Public Library is partnering with the OneCranston initiative and the Rhode Island Center for the Book to bring the 2018 Reading Across Rhode Island program to Cranston. Reading Across Rhode Island, Rhode Island’s One Book, One State community read program kicks off its 16th year by inviting everyone to join in the reading of The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. Reading Across Rhode Island is a program of the Rhode Island Center for the Book at the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities, made possible through a vibrant collaboration of librarians, teachers, book group leaders and readers from across the state.
About This Year’s Book “The Hate U Give is a brave, thought-provoking, conversation-enabling novel about what prejudice looks like in the 21st century. Sixteen-year-old Starr lives in two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she was born and raised and her private high school in the suburbs. The uneasy balance between them is shattered when Starr is the only witness to the fatal shooting of her unarmed best friend. Angie Thomas was born, raised, and still resides in Jackson, Mississippi. She is a former teen rapper whose greatest accomplishment was having an article about her in Right On! Magazine. She holds a BFA in creative writing and can still rap if needed.
There will be two events hosted at the Cranston Public Library, Central Library. The Central Library is located at 140 Sockanosset Cross Road.
On May 7, Reading Across Rhode Island Kick-off event will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. This event will feature a recorded video stream with author Angie Thomas, followed by a Q&A session with Reading Across Rhode Island Honorary Chair, Jordan Seaberry, Director of Public Policy and Advocacy at The Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence. Copies of The Hate U Give will be available for members of the public to borrow to participate in the Reading Across Rhode Island event. Barrington Books will also be in attendance for those who want to purchase the book. On June 4, The Hate U Give discussion will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. The Cranston Public Library will hold a discussion group for those who read The Hate U Give. The event will be guided by CPL staff with a thought provoking discussion on the societal themes brought up in the book. Both events will be open to the public with the Reading Across Rhode Island discussion aimed at teens and adults.
Fun and Funny - ad-lib comedy theater which is presented by the Almanac Drops will be featured every Thursday at 8 p.m. Each performance follows a workshop with the Artists’ Exchange Comedy Troupe. Pay what you can admission with a suggested donation of $5 per person at the door. Artists’ Exchange is located at 50 Rolfe Sq. in Cranston.
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the formation of the Cranston Public Library; the Cranston Public Library Association is holding a special fundraiser! You can purchase a set of library note cards which features hand drawn sketches of each of the 6 library locations. You can purchase a box for $8 at any Cranston Public Library location.

Freezing Food & Planning Meals will be the topic for “Tips for Freezing Foods” on May 9 at 10 a.m. This event will be held by the URI SNAP-Ed Program. Freezing is a quick and convenient way to extend the storage time of many foods and a great technique for having future meals ready.
URI Supplemental Assistance Program (SNAP) Outreach Clinic will be held the second Thursday of each month from 10 a.m. to noon on May 10 and June 14. If you have questions about your application, wish to apply for the assistance program, or have received correspondence from the SNAP office that you don’t understand then this clinic is for you! No appointment is necessary, first come first served.

The Cranston Public Library Association's Annual Book Sale will be taking place on Saturday, May 5 at the William Hall Library from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The modern holiday of Mother's Day was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother at St. Andrew's Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia. St. Andrew's Methodist Church now holds the International Mother's Day Shrine. Her campaign to make Mother's Day a recognized holiday in the United States began in 1905, the year her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, died. Ann Jarvis had been a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the American Civil War and created Mother's Day Work Clubs to address public health issues. Anna Jarvis wanted to honor her mother by continuing the work she started and to set aside a day to honor all mothers because she believed a mother is "the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world.”
In 1908, the U.S. Congress rejected a proposal to make Mother's Day an official holiday, joking that they would also have to proclaim a "Mothers-in-Law Day.” However, owing to the efforts of Anna Jarvis, by 1911 all U.S. states observed the holiday, with some of them officially recognizing Mother's Day as a local holiday (the first being West Virginia, Jarvis' home state, in 1910). In 1914, Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother's Day, held on the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honor mothers. (Source: Wikipedia)
