The RI Dream Center will be holding a Day of Hopes and Dreams on May 19 beginning at 8 a.m. There will be a 5K run/walk, and an Artisan Market. The event will be held rain or shine. The registration fee is $25 for all adult participants. All race participants and their supporters are invited to attend this event.
The Artisan Market will open at 8 a.m. at Western Hills Middle School on Phenix Ave in Cranston. Artisans from all around RI will be selling their homemade products. The Run 4 Hope 5K will begin registration at Cranston West High School at 8 a.m. with race beginning at 9 a.m. The first 100 registrants will receive an inaugural finisher's medal.
The Rhode Island Dream Center is an approved 501c3 non-profit agency that focuses on helping families and individuals in Rhode Island that are in need. All proceeds will benefit the RI Dream Center's many programs. Their programs include providing education, food, clothing, self-esteem building, spiritual 13 step program and much more. The West Bay Chorale will hold their upcoming concert, “Love Change Everything”, on Sunday, May 20 at 3 p.m., at the Edgewood Congregational Church, 1788 Broad St. in Cranston. Their featured selections include the beautiful Brahms Liebeslieder Waltzes along with various Broadway Love Songs from well- known productions such as Les Misérables, Wicked, The Sound of Music, and many more. This will all be under the direction of our very dedicated and enthusiastic director Eric W. Van Devort.

Park View Middle School will host another popular Food Truck Night on Thursday, May 24 from 4:30-7 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Park View Parent Teacher group and is free and open to the community. Current families are invited to attend, as well as past and future students, friends and neighbors. Frisky Fries, Kona Ice, Fancheezical, Incred-a-bowl, Open Season, and Sarcastic Sweets will all be at Park View. Park View Middle School is located at 25 Park View Boulevard in Cranston. On May 19, the Cranston Police Public Safety Day will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Texas Roadhouse parking lot, located at 99 Garfield Ave. The event is sponsored by the Cranston Police Department, OneCranston and the Substance Abuse Task Force. On hand will be the Cranston Police K-9 unit, police bikes, children’s obstacle course, Andy the Armadillo, police cars, face painting and more. This is a free event. The Walldogs are a group of highly skilled sign painters and mural artists from all over the globe that descend upon one town a year to visually transform it via exterior, large scale wall murals. Picture a “pack” of talented artists descending upon Cranston to paint the most beautiful murals you can imagine. Every wall that a Walldog touches springs to life with images of local places, people, and products that have historic significance to each town.
Westerly was the first town on the Northeast to hold this very successful Walldog event named “Bricks and Murals” and demonstrated the power of a town coming together to build community, boost economy, tourism and improve the town’s esthetic.
Cranston can be the second town on the Northeast to hold this lively event. Westerly’s team has graciously agreed to visit Cranston and share their amazing experience with us, as well as advise us how to create our own event. They will meet at the Artists’ Exchange, 50 Rolfe Sq. on May 30 from 6 to 8 p.m. At 6 p.m. there will be a reception, gallery opening and refreshments. Hors d’oeuvres and wine will be served. Mingle with presenters and guests while viewing Westerly’s Murals on display in the art gallery.

Comprehensive Community Action Program’s (CCAP) Cranston Child Development Center’s Head Start Program is kicking off its annual recruitment drive for our 2018-2019 school year. Head Start/Early Head Start provides a free comprehensive developmentally appropriate early education experience for children ages birth to five as well as Case Management for pregnant women. Participants must meet program requirements. Breakfast and lunch is provided. Their extended day program is available for families who are working or in school. The hours available are 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with DHS funding accepted.
They actively recruit children with special needs as defined in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). They also have Two State Funded Pre-K Classrooms Children must turn 4 by Sept. 1, 2018. The state funded Pre-K selection progress is by Lottery. Bone Builders of RI: “Promoting bone health & well-being” is a twice weekly exercise class for ages 55 and is held on Mondays from 1 to 2 p.m. and Thursdays 9 to 10 a.m. Suggested donation is $2. This innovative exercise program is based on research that has shown that moderate free-weight training performed at least twice a week for six months can improve strength and balance, and increase energy levels, while significantly increasing boned density. TinTown Studios will be opening their newest show, The 12x12 on May 18 from 6:30 to 8.30 p.m. They have more than 90 works of original art created by both professional and novice artists and designers across Rhode Island and other parts of New England. TinTown Studio is located at 40 Haven Ave. in Cranston.
The Cranston Historical Society will join the RI Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Elisha Dyer Camp No. 7 (the historic and legal descendant of RI Grand Army of the Republic Arnold Post No. 4) at Pocasset Cemetery on May 30, at 6 p.m., to commemorate the 150th Anniversary or Memorial Day Sesquicentennial. General Logan's General Order No. 11, issued on May 5, 1868 stated Memorial Day was created, "for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country."
There are more than 300 Civil War veterans buried at this cemetery along with Medal of Honor recipients.
Memorial Day, according to biographer Gary Ecelbarger, may be the most noteworthy tradition of observance in America. Memorial Day is not a holiday celebration, it is a day of solemn observance created to honor the passing of all American Veterans.
At the end of the traditional Pocasset Cemetery ceremonies, a GAR poem is read by a member of Camp 7. Several times the poem asks, "Who will carry on when the boys in blue are gone." Each time the question is asked, all the members of Camp 7 shout, "WE WILL !" The public is invited to join the solemn, meaningful and memorable procession through the cemetery this year as the graves of Civil War Veterans are honored.
The Armenian Historical Association of Rhode Island is presenting its new exhibit Rhode Island Armenians: Discovering the Past and Looking to the Future which will open on Saturday, May 19 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. with a program and reception at their museum located at 245 Waterman Street, Suite 204, Providence. The speaker Dr Hayk Demoyan, PhD - Director of the Genocide Museum and Institute in Yerevan, Armenia and currently visiting Fulbright Scholar at Harvard University will speak at 2 p.m. with a book-signing at 2:30 p.m. Twenty large panels depicting Rhode Island Armenian culture, heritage and history of the Armenians in Rhode Island through public exhibitions, displays, artifacts and media will be on display.

Several towns claim to be the originators of Memorial Day, but in 1966 Congress declared Waterloo, New York, to be the birthplace of the holiday. Memorial Day originally honored military personnel who died in the Civil War (1861-1865). The holiday now honors those who died in any war while serving with the United States.
