2018 Thunderbolt Marching Band Invitational
Calling all alumni, music lovers and Cranstonians - it's that time of year once again! Cranston High School East's Thunderbolt Band & Emerald Encore hosts its annual Marching Band Invitational at Cranston Stadium featuring 8 of New England's best high school marching bands, including Cranston East, Portsmouth, Dartmouth, Dennis-Yarmouth, Mansfield, Somerset-Berkley, Bishop Feehan and Oliver Ames High School on Oct. 13. The Thunderbolts will be performing their 2018 field show "Urban Pulse.”
Come enjoy the music and food and try your luck at the 50/50 raffle! A great night of family fun and Cranston tradition! Adults: $10; Students/Seniors: $8; Children Under Five: Free. Please note the schedule change with the program beginning at 5 p.m.
Volunteers are needed the day of and evening at the Invitational. The event is being hosted by the Cranston East Alumni Music Association with gates open at 4 p.m.

Defenders of Animals, Inc., will be holding its annual Blessing of the Animals outdoor event at the Governor Sprague Mansion, 1351 Cranston St., on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 10 a.m. “We wanted to bring attention to the value of animals and the goodwill and caring of both animals and their human guardians and the value that they bring to each other,” said Dennis Tabella, Director of Defenders of Animals, Inc.
“Anyone that has ever lost a pet realizes how deep that human companion and companion animal relationship was, and the Blessing of the Animals events bring attention to how invaluable that connection can be,” said Tabella. “It’s important that we recognize with gratitude the protectors and animal companions who have blessed our lives.” North Kingstown resident, The Reverend Sandra Demmler D'Amico, will be performing the blessing of the animals. Defenders of Animals, Inc., began in 1978 and has held numerous annual events along with the Blessing of the Animals like the Homeless Animals Day/Candlelight Vigil/Humane Awards Ceremony.
Online tutoring through the library
School's back in session and that means homework isn't far behind. Not sure how to help the student in your life find what they need for school? A Cranston Public Library card provides access to Tutor.com to help succeed at school.
Tutor.com offers free online tutoring by a qualified tutor in math, science, social studies and English, as well as access to online academic resources. You can also use their practice quizzes and SkillsCenter Resource Library to study 24/7. Students in any grade can get tutoring, which is available from 2 - 10 pm Sundays through Thursdays.

The Cranston Senior Enrichment Center will host a Flu Clinic on Oct. 16 from 9:30 a.m. to noon and will be provided by CVS Pharmacy. As winter draws near many wonder whether they should get vaccinated. For many the flu is a mild illness, causing fever, cough, chills, sore throat and body aches. But some - especially the elderly, young children and those with chronic diseases - are at risk for serious complications. While not perfect, the seasonal influenza vaccine is the best way to protect against the influenza viruses. This clinic is open to the public. Please be sure to bring your health insurance card(s).
St. David’s-on-The Hill will present their 2018 Author Event-Meet Michael Morse, author of Rescuing Providence and monthly contributor to The Providence Journal "My Turn.” He will share some of his rescue experiences of the Providence Fire Department and other contemplations of our life and times on Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. St. David's-on- The Hill, 200 Meshanticut Valley Parkway, Cranston. Everyone is welcome and bring a friend. Refreshments will be available. His books will be available for purchase.

Learn how you can manage and maximize your money by attending a free personal finance seminar and chat one-on-one with a financial planning professional in the Central Library Meeting Room on October 13 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This program is being presented by The Financial Planning Association of Rhode Island in conjunction with the Cranston Public Library.
Defenders of Animals will host their annual fundraising Pasta Fest on Sept. 29 at the Edgewood Congregational Church. At a donation of $10 per person you will enjoy a pasta dinner and raffles between the hours of 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Edgewood Congregational Church is located at 1788 Broad St. in Cranston. The Cranston Senior Guild’s next meeting will take place Oct.3 at 1 p.m. at Tamarisk Assisted Living, 3 Shalom Drive, Warwick. There will be a short meeting. Following the meeting, Jorene Lange, a classic country vocalist, who specializes in the style of Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn, will provide entertainment. There will be refreshments and a raffle. All men and women age 55 years plus are welcome to join. Membership is $12 for the year. Cranston residency is not required. The Coloring Book Club will meet on Mondays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. with free materials provided. Plenty activities can help seniors engage their brains and increase motor skills. A Matter of Balance/“Take a Stand to Prevent Falls” will be held Mondays and Fridays beginning Oct. 15 and ending Nov. 9 will all sessions being held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. This nationally recognized program reduces the fear of falling and increases activity levels. The program emphasizes practical strategies to manage falls. Who sold attend? Anyone concerned about falls. Anyone interested in improving balance, flexibility & strength. Anyone who has fallen in the past. Anyone who has restricted activities because of falling concerns. Upon successfully completing the free program each participant will receive a gift certificate. The Value of the Book workshop with Ray Rickman, back by popular demand, returns to the Cranston Public Library - Central Library on Monday, Oct. 1 from 6 to 8 p.m.

During this interactive program, Mr. Rickman will offer his thoughts on book values, drawing on his years of experience as a long-time rare book dealer in Providence and the former host of "Bestsellers" on Rhode Island Public Television. Mr. Rickman will cover what makes a book valuable, what type of book has the highest retail value, and will offer complimentary estimates of the value of up to three of your books.
Ray Rickman lectures throughout Rhode Island and beyond on a broad range of historical and cultural topics pertaining to American literature and African American history. This program will be held in the James Giles Community Room at the Central Library located on 140 Sockanosset Cross Road in Cranston. The program is free and open to the public. Lang's Bowlarama, 225 Niantic Ave. in Cranston will host the 4th Annual Ed Lang Memorial Car & Bike Show and this year, all years, makes and models are welcome.
The event is scheduled for Sept. 30 at 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with trophy presentations by 2:30 p.m. One hundred percent of the proceeds go to the RI Community Food Bank. They are collecting non-perishable food items for the RI Community Food Bank. For each food item you bring, you will receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win a Pizza Bowl (2 hours of bowling for up to 6 people, including shoe rental, 1 large pizza and a pitcher of soda. On Sept. 30, the 11th Annual Friends of the Poor Walk (SVDP RI) will be held in the Garden City Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Take a Step to end Poverty! Join in for music, food, and family fun! Don't forget to bring food, clothing, and toiletry donations to help local friends in need. SVDP RI is a nonprofit organization which is comprised of 434 parish-based volunteers who provided nearly $2.5 million in assistance to needy Rhode Islanders since 2015.
The Rotary Club of Cranston will host a Halloween Touch a Truck at Garden City Center on Oct. 28 from 9 a.m. to noon. Come dressed in your costume and touch trucks of all sizes. Donation is $10 per family.
Noreen Inglesi, who is a Cranston resident, is Notable Works’ Artist in Residence and she will be performing some of her original music and poetry with the Notable Works’ Ensemble as the opening act for a special event on Oct.19 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 99 Peirce Street (off Division Street) in East Greenwich. This event will feature renowned tenor Michael DiMucci who performers with Opera Providence and will also celebrate the release of Notable Works’ new publication “Love Warms The Homeless Heart:” A Collection of Original Poetry and Current List of Shelters and Services addressing the issue of homelessness.
