The Cranston Herald and Cranston Public Library are partnering for candidate forums. The forums will be Thursday, Oct. 18 for Citywide Council seats, and Thursday, Oct. 25 for school committee and ward candidates. Both forums start at 6 p.m. at Central library.
Calling all alumni, music lovers and Cranstonians - it's that time of year once again! Cranston High School East's Thunderbolt Band & Emerald Encore hosts its annual Marching Band Invitational at Cranston Stadium featuring 8 of New England's best high school marching bands, including Cranston East, Portsmouth, Dartmouth, Dennis-Yarmouth, Mansfield, Somerset-Berkley, Bishop Feehan and Oliver Ames High School on Oct. 13. The Thunderbolts will be performing their 2018 field show "Urban Pulse.” Come enjoy the music and food and try your luck at the 50/50 raffle. A great night of family fun and Cranston tradition! Adults: $10; Students/Seniors: $8; Children Under 5 free. Please note the schedule change with the program beginning at 5 p.m.

Registrations for the 2018-19 Cranston Youth Girls Basketball Association are now open. This is the 4th season of the league and plenty of options are available for every level of basketball player.
On top of the normal recreational league (grades 4-11) and travel basketball programs (grades 4-8), CYGBA is offering a clinic that leads into a developmental basketball league for girls aged 2-4 and an indoor 3 v. 3 league for the more advanced players in grades 7-11.

The Rotary Club of Cranston will host a Halloween Touch a Truck at Garden City Center on Oct. 28 from 9 a.m. to noon. Come dressed in your costume and touch trucks of all sizes. Donation is $10 per family.
Defenders of Animals, Inc., will be holding its annual Blessing of the Animals outdoor event at the Governor Sprague Mansion, 1351 Cranston St., on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 10 a.m.
“We wanted to bring attention to the value of animals and the goodwill and caring of both animals and their human guardians and the value that they bring to each other,” said Dennis Tabella, Director of Defenders of Animals, Inc. “Anyone that has ever lost a pet realizes how deep that human companion and companion animal relationship was, and the Blessing of the Animals events bring attention to how invaluable that connection can be,” said Tabella. “It’s important that we recognize with gratitude the protectors and animal companions who have blessed our lives.”
North Kingstown resident, The Reverend Sandra Demmler D'Amico, will be performing the blessing of the animals. Defenders of Animals, Inc., began in 1978 and has held numerous annual events along with the Blessing of the Animals like the Homeless Animals Day/Candlelight Vigil/Humane Awards Ceremony.
On Oct. 13, CCAP Family Health Services, located at 1090 Cranston St., will host a Harvest Time Diabetes Health Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the back-parking lot of the building.

The Cranston Senior Enrichment Center will host a Flu Clinic on Oct. 16 from 9:30 a.m. to noon and will be provided by CVS Pharmacy.
As winter draws near many wonder whether they should get vaccinated. For many the flu is a mild illness, causing fever, cough, chills, sore throat and body aches. But some - especially the elderly, young children and those with chronic diseases - are at risk for serious complications. While not perfect, the seasonal influenza vaccine is the best way to protect against the influenza viruses. This clinic is open to the public. Please be sure to bring your health insurance card(s).
St. David’s-on-the Hill will present their 2018 Author Event-Meet Michael Morse, author of Rescuing Providence and monthly contributor to the Providence Journal "My Turn.” He will share some of his rescue experiences of the Providence Fire Department and other contemplations of our life and times on Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. St. David's-on-the Hill, 200 Meshanticut Valley Parkway, Cranston. Everyone is welcome and bring a friend. Refreshments will be available. His books will be available for purchase.

All Cranston Public Library locations will be closed on Monday, Oct. 8 for Columbus Day and will reopen the following day.
The Cranston Public Library will begin Fall Sunday hours beginning on Sunday, Oct. 14 at the Central Library. The library will be open on Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. through Dec. 16. The Central Library is located at 140 Sockanosset Cross Road in Cranston.
The library will not have Sunday hours on November 11 due to Veterans Day. There will be no Sunday hours on Dec. 23 or Dec. 30 due to the Christmas and New Year's holidays. 2019 Sunday hours will be announced later in 2018.

“Are You Eating Enough?” will be presented on Oct. 10 at 10 a.m. by the URI SNAP-ED Program. Keeping a healthy weight is crucial. As we get older, our nutritional needs, appetite, and food habits can change. Not getting enough nutrients can lead to malnutrition and health problems. What can we do to avoid this?
Blue Cross Blue Shield Changes 2019 will be the topic of discussion on Oct. 18 at 10 a.m. presented by Susan Saccoccia-Olsen, Member Education Coordinator. The available plans and what they cover changes from year to year. Join us on the 18th to learn about the 2019 changes in the Blue Cross Blue Shield plans for 2019.
Come Dance With Us! on Tuesdays at 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. will feature Ballroom Dance for a fee of $4. You will brush up on your ballroom dance steps and/or learn new ones.
Line Dancing will be held on Wednesdays 1:15 to 2:15 p.m. for a fee of $2. A great way to get some exercise.

A Matter of Balance - “Take a Stand to Prevent Falls” will be held Mondays and Fridays beginning Oct. 15. It will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and end on Nov. 9. This nationally recognized program reduces the fear of falling and increases activity levels. The program emphasizes practical strategies to manage falls. Who sold attend? Anyone concerned about falls. Anyone interested in improving balance, flexibility & strength. Anyone who has fallen in the past. Anyone who has restricted activities because of falling concerns. There will be a Halloween BOOtique to benefit Help The Homeless RI on Oct. 27 at 11 a.m. through 3 p.m. at the Kelley Gazzerro VFW 2812, located at 1418 Plainfield Pike, Cranston.Shop for Halloween goodies or get an early start on Christmas shopping! There will be a Free Shred Day, hosted by The Washington Trust Company on Oct. 20 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Washington Trust building at 645 Reservoir Ave. in Cranston and at the Washington Trust building at 1383 Atwood Ave. in Johnston. Bring a canned good to benefit local food pantries.
There is a two-box maximum per person to be shred and all paper, including: invoices, timecards, contracts, tax returns, insurance records, legal documents, leases, computer printouts, customer lists, sales figures, sealed bids, statements, balance sheets, personnel records, newspapers, magazines, junk mail, etc. Staples, rubber bands, folders, paper clips do not need to be removed. Noreen Inglesi, who is a Cranston resident, is Notable Works’ Artist in Residence and she will be performing some of her original music and poetry with the Notable Works’ Ensemble as the opening act for a special event on Oct.19 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 99 Peirce Street (off Division Street) in East Greenwich. This event will feature renowned tenor Michael DiMucci who performers with Opera Providence and will also celebrate the release of Notable Works’ new publication “Love Warms The Homeless Heart:” A Collection of Original Poetry and Current List of Shelters and Services addressing the issue of homelessness.
