The Cranston Co-op Falcons were shut down by the Mount St. Charles Mounties 7-0 on Friday night at the Cranston Veterans Memorial Rink.

Mount St. Charles had a whopping 58 shots-on-net in the game while Cranston totaled just 18.

Cranston head coach Matt Brannon warned his squad ahead of time that they had their hands full with Mount St. Charles.

“We always tell them in the locker room, ‘the first five minutes are always important to come out there’ because they’re a hornet’s nest, they’re a tough team,” Brannon said. “They’re experienced. They’ve been around the ringer for a long time. Once we overcame that first minute of the game, it was actually a good game.”

Mount St. Charles started fast, netting its first goal 31 seconds into the contest. Senior forward Jacob Glod was credited with the goal and James Belisle and Brian Simpson got the assists. Twenty seconds later, Mount St, Charles struck again when freshman Jake MacKinnon lit the lamp on assists from Mike Canavan and Tyler Bourque to give Mount St. Charles an early 2-0 edge.

Cranston tried to get on the board, but a shot from sophomore forward Jaycob Hargreaves went wide before senior captain Jacob Pagnozzi’s shot was denied by Mount St. Charles goaltender Ryan Forget.

Mount St. Charles senior forward Joe Sanchioni had his slap rejected before his teammate Alex Gonfrade got snubbed by Cranston goaltender D.J. DeAngelis with 9:39 left in the opening period. A little over a minute later, Sam Eacueo came down for Cranston but was stopped by Forget.

Next, Mount. St Charles senior defenseman Jack Boisvert had his shot stopped by DeAngelis. Then, Cranston captain Kyle Poland fired, but it was stopped by Forget. Moments later, Glod deked past a Cranston defender before firing on net, but DeAngelis was there to make a dazzling glove save with 5:45 left in the first frame.

The Falcons went on the attack and assistant captain Justin Neary fed Hargreaves in front, but his shot was turned away by Forget. Down the other end, Alex Gonfrade had his shot attempt denied by DeAngelis. Next, Mount St. Charles’ Sanchioni shot wide, got his own rebound only to shoot again and get snubbed by DeAngelis. Mount St. Charles led 2-0 after one period.

Early in the second period, DeAngelis made a stick save on a shot from McKinnon. DeAngelis continued his stellar play, following with saves on two shots from Sanchioni. Down the other end, Forget stopped a shot from Pagnozzi before Eacueo shot wide.

Mount St. Charles went on a power play and Glod assisted to Sanchioni, who lit the lamp, putting Mount St. Charles up 3-0 with 10:21 left in the second period.

DeAngelis kept plugging away in net, stopping shots from Tyler Bourque and MacKinnon. Then, a five-minute major was called on Cranston’s Neary for a leg check. While Neary was in the sin bin, DeAngelis made back-to-back glove saves on two shots from Boisvert with 8:51 left in the period.

With 5:14 left in the second period the game was delayed when Glod was called for boarding – an illegal hit, which injured Cranston’s Josh Zambarano. Glod received a five-minute major and was ejected from the game.

DeAngelis stopped Jack O’Donnell in front with 3:23 left in the period, then Neary had a chance but was stopped by Forget. After two periods Mount St. Charles held a 3-0 lead.

Early in the third period, DeAngelis made saves on shots from Simpson, Canavan and Bourque. With 13:40 left, Mount St. Charles went on a power play. They took advantage 3:02 into the final frame when Simpson scored on assists from Gonfrade and Sanchioni.

Two minutes later, Simpson passed in front to Aidan Donahue but the Cranston defense was able to knock the puck away. Soon after, DeAngelis made a glove save on a shot from Boisvert. Tempers flared and Cranston’s Pagnozzi was punished with a five-minute major and disqualified for fighting with 9:14 left.  Boisvert capitalized, scoring a power play goal on a left-handed wrister with 7:44 left to go up 5-0.

Cranston tried to prevent a shutout, but attempts from Polland and Hargreaves were turned away by Forget.

With 5:18 remaining, Mount St. Charles struck again when Bourque scored another power play goal with 5:18 left to take a 6-0 lead. Then, Max Siegel lit the lamp with 3:47 left, putting Mount St. Charles up 7-0.

Despite the blowout loss, the Cranston coach liked what he saw from DeAngelis, his junior goaltender who played 40 of the 45 minutes of the game.

“It’s a long season, it’s a long grind, but our goalie really kept us in the game,” Brannon said. “He made some tremendous saves where the score could have got ugly and he kept the team together for the most part.”

“We just got to stick together,” Brannon said. “We’re a young team and we’ll see what happens.”
