Colonel Ann C. Assumpico, Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police and Director of the Rhode Island Department of Public Safety, announces that a Cranston resident has been arrested on a felony charge of driving to endanger resulting in death in connection with a fatal crash on Route 6 on Tuesday.

Alpha Williams, 47, of 23 Legion Way, Cranston, was arrested earlier today and will be held overnight at State Police Headquarters, pending arraignment in Sixth Division District Court tomorrow.

The arrest stems from a crash that occurred at approximately 7:10 p.m. Tuesday when a car driven by Williams went off the road and crashed into a guardrail on the ramp leading from the eastbound lanes of Route 6 to Hartford Avenue in Providence.

A passenger in the car, identified as David Johnson, age 47, of 48 Parkis Ave., Providence, was ejected from the vehicle.

Both men were transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where Mr. Johnson later died of injuries sustained in the crash.

Following an investigation by members of the Rhode Island State Police Scituate Barracks, the Collision Reconstruction Unit and the Forensic Services Unit, Troopers today obtained a warrant for the arrest of Mr. Williams, who was apprehended without incident.
