Henry earns conference-wide recognition

Posted

The book has closed on the collegiate baseball career of Cranston native and Hendricken alum Rob Henry, with his senior season once again garnering conference-wide recognition.

For the second time during his time at Brown, the former Hawk was selected to the all-Ivy League team, complementing his second-team nod in 2015 with a first-team selection this spring.

As the Bears’ lead-off man, Henry was among the team’s offensive pace-setters, putting together a .317 batting average and 13 runs batted in, while leading the squad in runs scored (31), triples (5) and stolen bases (9).

While those numbers were impressive in and of themselves, he saved his best for when the Brown nine took on Ivy League opposition, hitting .390 against conference rivals in addition to drilling each of his three home runs on the campaign when facing in-conference pitching.

After a slow start to the season that saw him go a combined 3-for-22 against Nicholls State and Texas A&M in early March, Henry’s bat came to life on March 18 against intrastate rival Bryant as he went 3-for-4 while scoring a pair of runs as Brown upended the Bulldogs 4-3 for its first win of the spring.

He was a home run short of the cycle that day, repeating the trick on April 22 by going 4-for-4 and scoring both Bears runs in a 3-2 setback to Harvard.

Henry was particularly active against the Crimson, going 10-for-16 during the four-game set with a pair of triples, six runs scored and a pair of stolen bases to his name.

He finished his stint on the Brown baseball team the following weekend against Yale, hitting successfully in each contest against the Bulldogs, slamming a home run in his final game, a 5-4 defeat on April 30.

The setback to the Elis marked the conclusion of a campaign that saw the Bears once again finish below the .500 mark in Ivy League competition, accruing a 6-14 record in conference play in addition to a 13-24 overall mark.

Menard recognized after standout season

Cranston West alumna Stephanie Menard’s 2017 campaign was a powerful one, with her swings at the plate going a long way in earning her a spot on the all-Northeast-10 team.

She earned a place on the second team after a season that saw her hit a team-high four home runs for Assumption while also pacing the Greyhounds with 18 runs batted in and a .532 slugging percentage.

Of Menard’s dingers, the most important one by far came in Assumption’s regular-season finale against Saint Anselm on April 30, with both teams jockeying for seeding in the NE-10 tournament.

In the top of the fifth and the Greyhounds trailing the Hawks 4-2, the ex-Falcon connected on a Morgan Perry offering and blasted it over the fence for a three-run blast that put Assumption on their way to an eventual 7-4 triumph.

Menard’s heroics earned Assumption the third seed in the Northeast division’s bracket and hosting privileges against fourth-seeded Southern New Hampshire in a single-elimination play-in game.

The Penmen put an end to the Greyhounds’ season, advancing via a 10-4 decision that saw SNHU put the game out of reach with a four-run seventh inning in which they batted around.

It marked the third season in a row that Assumption were knocked out in the play-in round, after falling to Le Moyne last spring and Saint Anselm two seasons ago.
