The bat of Cranston West product Travis Collins has been getting quite a workout in the early weeks of Albany’s 2019 season, with the former Falcon starting his senior year in fine form at the plate.

In the opening month of the Great Danes’ campaign, the infielder has recorded a 23 hits, good for second on the team which has helped him maintain a .329 batting average, topping the squad’s ledger among players with at least 50 at-bats.

All but one of Collins’s hits have been singles, with his only extra-base hit to date coming on March 3 as he smacked a triple against La Salle in the second game of a doubleheader with the Explorers.

Unfortunately, he ended up stranded 90 feet from home as the Albany nine was unable to make a dent on the scoreboard in the contest as La Salle salvaged a split with a 9-0 shutout after dropping the first game 6-5.

Collins’s failure to reach home proved to be a mere blip, as he is currently second on the team in runs scored with 12, with one-fourth of that total coming this past weekend as the Great Danes locked horns with Manhattan.

After taking the series opener 5-2 on Saturday, Albany suffered a sweep at the hands of the Jaspers, losing game one by a 5-3 score before falling 6-4 in the nightcap.

The Great Danes sat at 9-13 overall as of Tuesday, and look to make some noise against UMass Lowell this weekend on the road.

Cranston native and La Salle graduate Brenna DuPerry has been showing off her speed on the basepaths for the Johnson & Wales softball team, leading the Wildcats in extra-base hits and stolen bases.

As regards to the former, the senior shortstop has seven, including all three triples that the JWU lineup has recorded to date.

Two of those triples came when DuPerry went 3-for-5 with a run batted in and three runs scored as the Wildcats upended Salve Regina 8-2 in the first game of the doubleheader.

In the second half of the twinbill, the former Ram added a double and a pair of RBIs as JWU completed the sweep with a 9-6 decision, improving their record on the season to 8-6 in the process.

DuPerry has also been a threat when other batters are at the plate, as she has stolen seven bases so far on the season, with her sixth theft being the 50th of her collegiate career.

The Wildcats sit at 8-9 overall and will head for a weekend series on the road against St. Joseph’s in Connecticut.
