Cranston seniors let the games begin

WORDS OF INSPIRATION: The featured guest speaker during this year’s opening ceremonies for the CVS/Caremark Senior Games, held inside the Cranston West auditorium, was Dennis DeJesus, the Director of RI Special Olympics. He provided words of encouragement and inspiration to all the senior athletes prior to the games’ beginning.

THREE CHEERS: Members of the Cranston High School East cheerleading squad were on hand to cheer on senior athletes as they paraded into the auditorium.

GOING FOR THE GOLD: Ann McGowan, 88, takes her turn throwing the javelin.

IF THE SHOE FITS: Throwing a double ringer is 73-year-old Matty Paiano.

WALKING IN STYLE: Getting their exercise as well as some friendly competition, seniors step off during the women’s 400-meter walk held at Cranston High School West.

MOLLY AND THE MAYOR: Molly Romano, who will turn 76 this week, is well known in the community for her volunteer services. She was this year’s torchbearer, carrying the torch during the opening ceremonies on Saturday morning. She is pictured here with Mayor Allan Fung.

"Let the games begin” were the last words hundreds of senior citizens heard at the closure of opening ceremonies for the 18th annual CVS/Caremark Senior Games held this past weekend at Cranston High School West. Some events took place at different venues throughout the week and weekend for bowling, golf and bocce tournaments. All senior athletes received a complimentary polo shirt, a CVS gift card and will receive their medals during an upcoming dinner. (Herald photos by Meri R. Kennedy and Steve Popiel)
