On Sunday, Feb. 3, nearly two-dozen Cranston students were honored for their extraordinary works of art at the 2019 Scholastic Art Awards Opening Ceremony at Salve Regina University in Newport.

The event was sponsored by the Rhode Island Art Education Association, or RIAEA. The awards ceremony took place in the Bazarsky Lecture Hall of the O’Hare Academic Building and was followed by an art gallery exhibit opening at the Dorrance Hamilton Gallery in the Antone Academic Center at the University.

According to RIAEA, Rhode Island is part of 81 regions that participate in the program, which includes students in more than 50 public, private and parochial secondary schools. The competition is for grades seven through 12, and 1,500 pieces were submitted for consideration.

Student work was nominated for the Scholastic Art Awards program from schools all over the state and a percentage of the total entries per category were awarded Gold Key, Silver Key and Honorable Mentions awards. Seniors were given additional recognition for their fine art portfolios. Five pieces were given the American Visions award for the best artwork overall, and all Gold Key pieces are forwarded to New York for the national competition, where the artwork will compete within its category against submissions from students across the United States.

In the Cranston Public Schools, several students received Gold Key awards and their work will be judged in New York. Those students are Arianna Deal, Sabrina Sorvillo and Inthavha Singharaj from Cranston High School West and Sarah Chin from Western Hills Middle School.

Additionally, the following students from Cranston Public Schools won awards:

Cranston High School East: Emily Fontes, two Silver Keys; Enid Corcoran, Honorable Mention; Salome Freulon, Honorable Mention; Marissa North, Honorable Mention; Sara Sprague, Honorable Mention; Melanie Trindade, Honorable Mention. Cranston High School West: Arianna Deal, Silver Key; Sabrina Sorvillo, Silver Key; Ava Caliri, Silver Key; Briana Cipolla, Silver Key; Samantha Clarke, Silver Key; Elizabeth Cowart, Silver Key; Ariel Laurendeau, Silver Key; Maria Caserta, Honorable Mention; Makayla Vieira, Silver Key and Honorable Mention.

Hope Highlands Middle School: Olivia Patriarca, Honorable Mention.

Park View Middle School: Paola Dilone, Silver Key; Alana Williams, Silver Key.

The awards ceremony was emceed by Joe Belanger, regional director of the Scholastic Art Awards. The university address was given by Gerry Perrino, chair of art and art history at Salve Regina University.

RIAEA president Kristin Heynen also addressed the audience, while RIAEA president-elect Michelle Turner presented the awards to the students and Janet Trombetti from the General Federation of Women’s Clubs of Rhode Island handed out three monetary awards to female artists whose pieces positively depicted women.

The keynote speaker for the ceremony was Kathleen Pletcher, executive artistic director of FirstWorks. Pletcher spoke to the audience about the evolution of an idea, and of connecting art and audiences through unique, inclusive, diverse projects and performances. She encouraged the artists to consider the impact of their art and to think about what can be considered a canvas for artistic expression.

All were invited to the gallery exhibit, where the student artists proudly shared their award-winning works with family and friends as well as with many of the educators who nominated their work.

The exhibit will be open until Feb. 16. The gallery is open Monday and Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday from 11 a.m to 6 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
