Dedication marks new garden at William Hall Library

A ceremony to mark a new garden at the William Hall Library at 1825 Broad St. held a special dedication ceremony on June 28 for their new sensory garden at the library’s back entrance. The sensory garden was planted by the Edgewood Garden Club (EGC) as part of its 2016-2017 program year emphasizing garden therapy. This is the third garden planted and maintained in the Edgewood section of Cranston.

In 2006, the EGC created the front bed garden at the Village Playground on Commercial Street. In 2012, it put in native plants in the garden in front of the Gaspee Monument Rock at Stillhouse Cove.

The club selected plants for their distinctive color, smell and feel to create a visually appealing and soothing experience for patrons. They used all perennials. Among the specimens are some native ones including joe pye weed, lamb’s ear sage, clematis and lavender. A wooden obelisk centers the garden, which sits within an existing raised bed planter. Club funds purchased the plants and members put them in after receiving permission from the Board of Trustees of the William Hall Library.

The Edgewood Garden Club was established in January 1933, a little more than five years after the Hall Library building and grounds opened to the public in November 1927. It will celebrate its 85th anniversary in 2018. They are about 70 members strong, with some from the Gaspee Plateau area of Warwick, but the majority of members are from Cranston, with several from areas in central and western parts of the city.

Mayor Allan Fung and several officials, club members and trustees were in attendance, including Steve Stycos, Ward 1 Councilman; Adrienne Gallo-Jirard, Hall Librarian; Ed Garcia, Library Director, Cranston Public Library, Michael Moonan, Chair of the Library Commission of the Board of Trustees and Mary Jo Hines, EGC President and the garden’s primary advocate.
