Delomba falls to Williams at Twin River

“Nice” Nick Delomba dropped a unanimous decision to Jimmy “Quiet Storm” Williams at Twin River Casino on Friday night. The fight went all 10 rounds with the judges scoring the fight, 98-91, 97-92 and 97-92 all in favor of Williams.

With the win, Williams earned the vacant WBC USNBC Welterweight championship title. It was the ninth victory in a row for the undefeated Williams and the second loss of Delomba’s pro career.

Williams started the fight strong, landing a pair of right hands midway through the first round, which knocked Delomba off his feet with 10 seconds remaining. Delomba would return to his feet in time to continue.

“I’ve seen him get knocked down previously before this fight and he got up and won the fight,” Williams said. “I knew if I didn’t put him away, then I just knew that he was going to get better and better as the fight went on. That’s what I’ve seen of him, that’s what I knew about him. I knew, OK, if I don’t stop him, then I had to get back and get ready for a tough fight, so I was ready for that too. I had it covered on both angles.”

Delomba looked sharper in the second round, however, Williams would still control the bulk of the fight.

In the third, Williams hit Delomba with a big shot that buckled the knees of the Cranston native, but Delomba was able to stay upright.

Delomba collected the sixth round, connecting on a flurry of punches before the bell.

In the seventh, Williams connected with a vicious right hand that Delomba somehow swallowed. Next, Williams had Delomba on the ropes and pummeled him, but Delomba kept up his defense long enough to sneak out of the round.

In the 10th, the boxers threw haymakers at one another until the ringing of the bell. The fighters hugged when it was all said and done.

“Hard work pays off,” Williams said. “I was very prepared. I trained hard. I knew that Nick was a great fighter. He’s a true warrior. I knew that this fight was going to bring the best out of me. So, I just knew that I had to be ready for it.”
