Cumberland plated four runs in the second inning and three runs in the fourth en route to an 8-1 victory over Cranston East on Monday afternoon, handing the ’Bolts their first loss of the season after a 5-0 start.

The Clippers got on the board first when sophomore Chris Davock chopped a grounder between third and shortstop with the bases loaded for an infield single, bringing Reuben Hancock in from third.

With the bases still loaded, Drew Szafranski delivered what turned out to be the biggest hit of the game, lining the ball into the left-centerfield gap off of East starter Gio Canales, plating all three runners on base to up the Cumberland lead to 4-0.

East’s lineup put some good swings on Cumberland senior right-hander Austin Cabral throughout the game, but many of the hard-hit balls ended up as outs.

While East was struggling to get anyone on base, Cumberland tacked on to its lead in the fourth, as three consecutive bases-loaded walks pushed the Clippers’ lead out to 7-0.

East didn’t have its first baserunner until the bottom of the fourth, when Alex Martinez reached on an error by the third baseman. Its first hit wouldn’t come until an inning later, with junior Marcos Badia ripping a pitch up the middle for a base knock.

The ’Bolts scored their lone run on a wild pitch in the fifth, but they were unable to capitalize any further. Jacob Frost hit a frozen rope right at Cumberland’s centerfielder with runners at second and third and two down to help Cabral escape the inning without further damage.

Cumberland would add one more run in the sixth inning on an RBI single up the middle from junior right fielder Zachary Fogell off East reliever Edwin Colon-Chavez, bringing the score to 8-1.

East put two runners on in the seventh in a last-ditch effort to mount a comeback, but it couldn’t cut into the deficit any further.

Cabral exited the game after 6 2/3 innings with his pitch count rising, and Addison Kopack came on in relief and struck out the only batter he faced to nail down the win.

East was in for another good test on Wednesday, when it was set to host Coventry (5-2), but results were unavailable at press time.
