To celebrate a season of hard work, teamwork, friendship and a Division 1 victory, members of the Cranston East Unified Basketball team were treated to a special lunch and award ceremony on Monday, June 3.
The seven-student roster of Demitrius Pacheco, Sam Gray, Shawn Low, Maggie Hurley, Emily Sanita and Dylan Needham celebrated with their peer partners, Austin Faria-Meade, Hector Duran, Dayshaun White, Ethan Mulholland and Rayven DeOlivera.
Coach Stephen Hallas spoke to the players about the past season.
“We work together, we have respect for each other, and we support each other,” he said. “In the beginning, we were nervous, weren’t we? We were afraid to shoot the ball, there were so many people watching.”
He went on to praise their performances.
“But, you went out there, and you tried your best no matter what the situation was,” he said. “And that is what you need to take with you. Because at some point, you are going to be nervous again. I want you to remember that you are state champions, you beat everybody. You can do whatever you want to. You should be very, very proud of that.”
Each team member was presented with a T-shirt that was donated by New England Athletic Apparel, and special quarter zip sweaters bearing their names and varsity letters.
“These kids all worked so hard this season. Their peers were patient, supportive and guided them to a well-earned state championship. I am so proud of all the students involved,” Cranston East Principal Sean Kelly said.
