The Cranston East Lady Bolts lacrosse team came back to beat a battle-tested North Smithfield Lady Northmen 10-9 in sudden-death overtime on Friday afternoon at Cranston Stadium during a Division III thriller.

Freshman Savana Lavimodiere scored the Lady Bolts final three goals, and four in total.

Lavimodiere netted the game-tying goal with 1:03 remaining in regulation after she stripped the ball from North Smithfield sophomore defenseman Thao Nguyen before firing it into the cage.

Then, just 23 seconds into overtime, Lavimodiere also scored the game-winner.

“It feels great,” Lavimodiere said. “They were good competition, but we came out in the end, and we just wanted it more and played stronger.”

Also coming up huge for the Lady Bolts was Allie Notarianni, a senior, who had two goals, plus an assist, and junior Hope Halvarson, who chipped in two goals.

The North Smithfield offense was topped by Madison Reynolds and Sam Mattos, both juniors, who had four goals apiece.

In net, Bernadette Linsangan, a senior, made 16 saves for East while Alyssa Narodowy, also a senior, stopped three shots for North Smithfield.

Seven minutes and forty-two seconds into the contest, North Smithfield took a 1-0 advantage when Mattos sniped a shot into the rack past Linsangan.

Thirty-two seconds later, East’s Halvarson won the ensuing draw, and went the distance before knotting the game at 1.

Then, with 16:07 remaining in the first half, Reynolds scored after an assist from Hope Smith, which gave the Lady Northmen a 2-1 edge.

Ten minutes later, East evened the score at 2 when Angelina Ortiz, a sophomore, assisted to senior Lilly Frappier, who blasted it past Narodowy.

With 4:50 remaining in the half, East took a 3-2 lead when Lavimodiere scored during a free position shot.

Fifty-five seconds later, North Smithfield tied the game at 3 when Mattos passed to Reynolds for a tally.

Next, with 1:02 left in the half, North Smithfield took a 4-3 margin after Sam Hvizdos set a perfect pick for Reynolds, who cut right before tossing a dime in front to Mattos, who rifled a shot into the back of the rack.

Then, with 38 seconds left remaining, East evened the game at 4 when Laura Jones scored during a free position shot.

Twenty-four seconds into the second half, East drew a 5-4 lead when Halvarson assisted to Notarianni for a tally.

A little over two minutes later, Notarianni lit the lamp again and upped the Lady Bolts advantage to 6-4.

North Smithfield answered one minute and 20 seconds later, though, when Mattos scored and got the Lady Northmen within 6-5.

Shortly after though, East restored its two-goal lead when Halvarson scored during a free position shot, which put the Lady Bolts up 7-5.

With 12:27 remaining, North Smithfield’s Reynolds scored and pulled the Lady Northmen within 7-6.

Then, 38 seconds later, the Lady Northmen evened the game at 7 when Nguyen earned a steal and assisted to Reynolds for a goal.

Next, with 11:43 to play, Lavimodiere fired a leaping shot into the rack from in front and put East up 8-7.

Just under two minutes later, North Smithfield leveled the game at 8 when Mattos put a rising shot of her own into the cage.

Fifty-three seconds later, North Smithfield drew a 9-8 advantage after Hope Smith scored, following an assist from Mattos.

Then, with 1:03 remaining and East, trailing by one, Lavimodiere stole the ball from Nguyen and rifled a shot past Narodowy and tied the game at 9, forcing a three-minute sudden-death overtime period.

Twenty-three seconds into the extra period, Lavimodiere scored her third straight goal and gave the Lady Bolts a thrilling 10-9 victory.

It was a hard-fought win by the Lady Bolts, who improve to 7-1 on the season, and don’t expect them to slow down anytime soon.

“Today, we had a hard fight, but going forward, I think we’re going to go even harder because we’re going to try to win it,” Lavimodiere said.

East head coach Howard Chun felt his team could have performed better against a now 1-4 North Smithfield team.

“We probably should have done a little bit better against this team, but we just dropped, and dropped, and dropped,” Chun said. “But they stuck with it. They gutted it out and we’re fortunate to get the win. We could have easily lost this game.”

The Lady ‘Bolts also played on Tuesday at Ponaganset (3-1), but the score was unavailable at press time. East plays next on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Providence Country Day School (1-2).
