The Thunderbolts boys soccer squad blanked the Mount St. Charles Mounties 5-0 on Monday evening at Cranston Stadium in Division II.

East senior star Kerin Murillo, who has almost fully recovered from a minor injury, led the Bolts with two goals and two assists.

“We moved the ball around,” East head coach Richard Grenier said. “And one of our better players, the all-stater Kerin Murillo, he’s almost 100 percent. He sprained his ankle in physical education three weeks ago and he’s really been hampered at things that he can excel at. So, that ankle’s really getting healthy now and he really did a good job moving without the ball and moving on the ball. He did a really good job tonight.“

Mount senior goalkeeper Jacob Maddalena made 22 saves in net while East sophomore Jorge Avila stopped seven shots. It marks Avila’s fifth shutout this season.

Eight minutes into the contest, Murillo sent a cross pass into the box to Jon Soberanis, a junior, who booted the ball into the right side of the net and gave the Bolts a 1-0 edge.

Three-and-a-half minutes after that, East added its second tally when Murillo found David DaSilva for a goal which extended the Bolts advantage to 2-0.

Thirty-six seconds later, Murillo scored a flashy goal between two defenders after an assist from Soberanis, and upped the Bolts buffer to 3-0.

Then, with 24:35 remaining in the first half, Murillo accepted an assist from Joe Lenk, and then dribbled into the box and fired a shot into the right corner of the net past both Josh Mills, a defenseman, and Maddalena, the keeper, and gave East a 4-0 margin, a lead the ‘Bolts would bring into the break.

East recorded its last goal with 7:08 remaining in the contest, when Denilson Granados, a junior, scored during a free kick and gave the Bolts a 5-0 cushion.

In its nine games, the Bolts have allowed just five goals total. And once the postseason begins, East is sure to be a contender for the D-II title.

“Two years ago we won it all in Division III and we’re just hoping that we get a good position for the playoffs,” Grenier said. “And hopefully we can make a run at teams like North Smithfield, Mount St. Charles, Hope, Lincoln and East Greenwich. There’s like five or six teams that are very solid.”

The Bolts improve to 8-1 in the league with the win and play against Cranston West (2-8) next on Sunday at 6:45 p.m. back at Cranston Stadium.
