East students send Valentines to veterans

Posted

Over the course of two days, almost 250 students visited the Cranston East High School library to send their thanks and regards to veterans who are at the VA medical center in Providence.

Students were required to write a letter to a veteran, thanking them for their service and letting them know their sacrifices are appreciated. After they wrote the note, they could move on to the craft portion of the project.

When the students were finished, they ended up with about 140 letters, more than 80 pom-pom love bugs, and over 100-paper flower Valentines.

“I was thrilled by the turnout and also by the heartfelt sentiments that many of the students included in their letters,” said Heidi Blais, East librarian and coordinator of the project. “This project is the sort of thing that East is all about: reaching out to the community to help others. Many of the students have relatives in different branches of the military, so they understand the sacrifice that was made by our U.S. veterans. I hope that the students' letters and Valentine greetings brighten the days and bring smiles to the faces of those who receive them.”

The students were all happy and excited to be part of the project for different reasons.

“I wanted to let the vets know that they are thought of, especially on Valentine’s Day,” senior Nathan Harding said. “They should know that someone is thinking about them.”

Sophomore Kaitlyn Mastrangelo felt that it was the least she could do for the sacrifices that the veterans have made.

“For everything they have been through, taking the time to write a note and send a card to thank them for risking their lives is not a big deal,” she said.
