Edgewood appreciates Cranston in bloom

GARDEN OF AUGUST: Edgewood Garden Club selected the garden at 65 Mayflower Drive as the final Garden of the Month for the 2012 season. Monika Curnett grew up in the Edgewood neighborhood and has been a passionate gardener since she was little girl. Starting from a completely blank slate, Curnett developed a cheerful cottage feel to her garden with colorful perennials mixed with summer blooming annuals. Gardening is a joy for the award winner, who started the idea of planting flowers along the island strip on Mayflower Drive to beautify the area. She also volunteers at the Roger Williams Park Botanical Center.

GARDEN OF JULY: The Edgewood Garden Club has selected the garden at 1847 Broad Street for the July Garden of the Month award. Nancy Messier has been gardening most of her life, following in her mother’s footsteps. As a former art teacher, Nancy definitely has the artist’s touch in her garden. The softly flowing lines allow the garden to gracefully frame this Tudor style home. A real hands-on gardener, Nancy set the brick path to her front entrance and made several bricks embossed with fun words such as “giggle” and “imagine.”

The Club is a member of the Rhode Island Federation of Garden Clubs and is in its 79th year of furthering horticultural appreciation and knowledge for members and the public. With close to 70 members including men and women, it focuses on civic beautification, community outreach and education projects. Ongoing projects include design and maintenance of gardens at the Commercial Street Village Playground, Stillhouse Cove and support for the hydroponic gardening project at E.S.
