Falcons, Thunderbirds aiming for first wins

A pair of Cranston teams will have a good opportunity to get off the schneid this week as they look to get in the win column for the first time this season.

The Cranston West girls’ basketball team has had some trouble gaining traction in Division I this season with a largely inexperienced roster. Overall, the Falcons have compiled a record of 0-9, but they’ve shown signs of progression, dropping four of those games by 10 points or less in the state’s top division.

And the Falcons have a couple of winnable games coming up.

They were set to play at Coventry (2-7) on Tuesday night, but results were unavailable at press time.

They’ll also see a team that has had its fair share of struggles as well on Thursday, as Chariho (0-8) will make the trip to Cranston for a 7 p.m. tip.

If West wishes to come out on the winning side, it’ll need a big game from sophomore forward Katie Blake, who’s the only Falcon averaging in double figures with 11.5 points per contest.

The Cranston/East Greenwich Co-op girls’ hockey team will be in a similar boat when it takes to the ice on Saturday night at 6:15 p.m. at Thayer Arena against Warwick Co-op.

The Thunderbirds (0-10) haven’t been able to find the back of the net frequently this winter, netting seven goals in 10 games. But, they too will encounter a winnable matchup on Saturday against Warwick (0-8), which has scored just six goals and has yielded more goals per game than Cranston.

The Thunderbirds’ top line has produced at times this season, and it’ll have to carry play against the Lady Titans.

Sophomore Abbi Sampson has had a knack for the net in the first half of Cranston’s slate, leading the way with four goals.

Senior Jena Villeneuve is tied for the team lead with four points on two goals and two assists. Fellow senior Brittney Bidwell has racked up three assists of her own.

If the Thunderbirds were to pull off the win, it would be the program’s first since the 2013-14 season.

EDITOR'S NOTE: West defeated Coventry on Tuesday night after press time for its first league win of the season. Julia Improta, Savannah Bissitt and Katie Blake all scored in double-figures in the win.
