Families put safety first at Garden City event

UNDER ARREST? School Resource Officer Matt Davis from the Cranston Police Department had some fun with Mayor Allan Fung during Cranston Family Safety Day in Garden City after the mayor knocked over more than 15 cones while wearing “Fatal Vision Goggles,” which simulates driving under the influence during the daytime.

On May 19, the third Cranston Family Safety Day was held in Garden City Center, free of charge. The event included fun activities for the entire family with a focus on safety. The event was sponsored by the Cranston Substance Abuse Task Force, Mayor Allan Fung and the city of Cranston, the Cranston Police Department, Whole Foods and Garden City Center. Approximately 200 members of the community, young and old, attended the afternoon event.

Cranston Family Safety Day also included free Child ID Cards, fire safety, bike safety, car seat checks, health screening (provide by CCAP), the Cranston YMCA’s “Y on the Move,” the Rock Wall from the Rhode Island National Guard, R.I. State Police Rollover Simulator, child face painting and Bosco, the Cranston Police K-9 dog.

The first 500 children who attended were personally fitted with new bicycle helmets that were donated by the Cranston Family Center with a grant from the state Office on Highway Safety and the Brain Injury Association of R.I. (Herald photos by Meri R. Kennedy and Steve Popiel)
