Firefighter's allegation of 'inappropriate behavior' under investigation

Posted

An investigation is underway regarding a Cranston firefighter’s allegation of “inappropriate behavior by others,” according to Mayor Allan Fung’s administration.

“We take these allegations incredibly seriously,” Fung said in a statement. “Promptly after learning of these firefighter’s concerns, we engaged a well-regarded third party investigator to complete an independent outside investigation, which is ongoing. Following this investigation, the city will determine the appropriate next steps, including swift and harsh corrective action for any corroborated misconduct.”

Daniel Parrillo, Fung’s director of administration, said a complaint from the firefighter was received approximately two weeks ago. He did not identify the firefighter and described the nature of the complaint only as a “workplace harassment type of allegation.”

Parrillo said the administration has hired attorney Michael DeSisto to investigate the allegation. He also said no additional action – such as discipline or placement on leave of any employee – has been taken regarding the complaint at this point.

Council President Michael Farina said the administration has informed the council that a complaint has been filed and that an investigation is being conducted.

He said he asked the administration to provide an update at the Nov. 25 council meeting, although that has been delayed until the regular December meeting to allow time for the investigation to be conducted. If the investigation is completed sooner than the December meeting, he said, an update will be provided during a special meeting.

“I take every accusation very seriously,” Farina said.
