Fung hires former Elorza staffer as campaign press secretary

Mayor and gubernatorial candidate Allan Fung has hired Andrew Augustus, formerly a reporter and press associate for Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza, as his press secretary in his bid to be Rhode Island’s next governor.

Augustus said that he was a reporter for News Talk 630 WPRO for two years after graduating from Rhode Island College, and his relationship with Fung began by covering stories the Mayor was involved in.

“I always had a lot of respect for him, how he would treat me, he’d always make himself as available as possible,” Augustus said.

“Andrew comes to us with experience on both sides of the microphone as well as a passion for Rhode Island,” Fung said in a press release.  “We are thrilled to have him join our team.”

After his time as a reporter, Augustus moved into the political realm after being hired as a press associate for Mayor Elorza.  That was his last position before being hired as Fung’s press secretary for his latest gubernatorial campaign.

About wanting to work on Fung’s campaign staff, Augustus said Fung is a “guy I can get behind” and he always thought that the Mayor “seemed genuine and genuinely cares about the city of Cranston and the whole state.”

He said he’s getting acclimated to the campaign, but his overall goal over the course of the coming months, which he said will be “a blast,” is to “show Rhode Islanders the man Allan is and that he cares about Rhode Island.”
