Games to watch in Cranston

With the spring sports regular season beginning to wind down, there will be a handful of big games for Cranston High Schools the rest of this week.

Cranston City Cup

The Cranston East and West lacrosse teams will be squaring off for the annual Cranston City Cup this Saturday.

The West squad has dominated the series on each side recently. The West boys won their fifth straight cup with an 12-8 win over the Thunderbolts last season. The West girls have been equally dominant, winning every cup since 2012.

The Cranston West boys got off to a rocky start to begin the season at 0-4. The Falcons would later rebound with four straight wins to hoist themselves back into the playoff scenario in the tough Division II North group. The East boys have had a solid year, hovering above .500 and staying in the playoff picture as well.

The Cranston girls squads have been in a tight battle all year and having been neck and neck in the Division III standings.

Baseball

Cranston East and Cranston West will also get an opportunity to look into the future when the two junior varsity baseball clubs square off on Saturday at 10 a.m.

The Cranston East varsity team began the season on a 6-0 run but have fallen back to earth recently. Although the playoffs look promising, the Falcons will have another test on Friday when they square off against Johnston, who has also been trying to keep pace in the Division I playoff hunt.

West has been battling for playoff positioning with East all season and will also have a game with big postseason implications when it goes up against La Salle on Saturday.

Tennis

The Cranston West boys tennis team jumped out to a 4-0 start this spring and appeared to be in the driver’s seat for the top seed in the Division II group. However, the Falcons have been inconsistent as of late, and will take on a tough West Warwick team coming from Division II A. A win could help lock up the top seed in the division, while a loss could result in a sizeable drop in the standings considering the top four seeds are within two wins of each other.
