Gatorade Player of Year heads to Brown next year

With an acceptance to Brown University under his belt, continued recovery from a serious injury sustained during a game, and being named Gatorade’s 2018 Player of the Year, Cranston West’s Will Such has had quite the senior year, and quite the ride, since starting out in sports in early elementary school.

“I started playing football in the third grade, starting out with my dad as my coach for CLCF,” Such said. “I played all sports, but football was always my favorite. Once I got to high school, I started to take it more seriously, working in the off-season, working with my team and trying to get better.”

Such believes that all of that hard work really paid off.

“It really showed how much preparation we did, not just me, but my whole team,” he said. “I could not do it without them. When I hurt my leg, I missed the playoffs, but I played hard for the rest of the season before that.”

Such suffered a spiral-fractured fibula, which happened during the last regular season game, and he said that it was indeed as painful as it sounds. Finding out about the Gatorade honor in mid-December was a bright spot on his road to recovery, and is a designation that recognizes both athletic and academic success, as well as exemplary character in its winners. His trophy recently arrived, making it truly official.

“I knew I had a shot to win it this year,” he said. “It comes along with $1,000 to donate to a charitable organization. I am donating it to the fund for the mom of the kids from the West End Intruders in Providence. They were coming back from a Super Bowl game in Florida last year and had a car accident and one of the team moms died. I have donated the money to West End Intruders organization for that cause.”

As senior year is nearing the halfway point, Such has a game plan for the final months until graduation.

“I’m going to be healing my leg and trying to get back to 100 percent,” he said. “I have a lot of off-season work to do to get ready for next season at Brown.”

In addition to playing football at the Ivy League school, Such plans to major in business.
