‘Glorious Brahms’ featured in RI Civic Chorale & Orchestra season finale

The Rhode Island Civic Chorale and Orchestra with Edward Markward as Music Director, will hold its final concert of its 60th Anniversary season, “Glorious Brahms, A Requiem for the Living” on June 3 at 7:30 p.m. at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, 30 Fenner Street, Providence. The Brahms’ beloved work features, Ein deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem) and Variations on a Theme of Haydn.

Soloists for the performance will be native Rhode Islander, soprano Diana McVey, and in his first appearance with RICCO, baritone David Kravitz.

Diana McVey is an artist whose consummate skills as both a singer and an actress have made her highly visible in opera, oratorio and as soloist with symphony orchestras. Her recent engagements include a gala concert with Opera Tampa, La Bohèm with the Helena Symphony, Elijah with the daho State-Civic Symphony, Countess Madeleine in Strauss’s final opera Capriccio with Opera Theater of Pittsburgh, Adina in L ’Elisir d’amore and Contessa in Le Nozze di Figaro with Florentine Opera, Vaughan Williams’s Dona Nobis Pacem with the Helena Symphony, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis with the Salisbury Singers, Contessa in Le Nozze di Figaro Opera daho, Die Zauberflöte with Opera Omaha,productions of Carmen, La Bohème, La Traviata and Lucia di Lammermoor with the Belleayre Music Festival, La Rondine and The Merry Widow with Opera Tampa, and Faure’s Requiem, Mozart’s Requiem, and Vivaldi ’s Gloria at Carnegie Hall. Upcoming engagements include an appearance with the Music on the Hill festival, and Verdi’s Requiem with the Helena Symphony.

Hailed as “a charismatic baritone” by the New York Times and acclaimed as one of “the finest dramatic concert singers active today,” David Kravitz recently appeared with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony, the Virginia Symphony, Boston Baroque, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Emmanuel Music and the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival.

His recent opera engagements include performances with Boston Lyric Opera (Abraham in Clemency), Emmanuel Music (Nick Shadow in The Rake’s Progress and Nick Carraway in The Great Gatsby), and the New England Philharmonic (Wozzeck in Wozzeck). He recently created the lead role of De Sade in Nicola Moro’s Love Hurts at the Piccolo Teatro in Milan, Italy and at Symphony Space in New York City.

RCCO will be joined by members of the Sippican Choral Society from Marion, Massachusetts, under the direction of conductor Dr.Tianxu Zhou, for Ein deutsches Rquiem.

The concert will be conducted by Dr. Edward Markward, celebrating a milestone thirty years as RICCO ’s Music Director.
