Cranston student takes regional honors in scholastic art awards

From a pool of hundreds of talented student artists throughout the state, Andrew Salisbury of Cranston received a Silver Key Award and was named a 2018 Rhode Island Scholastic Art Award Winner at a ceremony held in January at the Roberts Hall Auditorium at Rhode Island College.

Led by the Rhode Island Art Education Association, the annual competition recognized artists for work that demonstrated originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision. Each art teacher in the state was invited to submit up to six pieces of work for consideration.

Andrew Salisbury, a senior at Hendricken, presented a calligraphy illustration entitled "Believers," designed, as he stated, "to be reminiscent of celestial bodies and overall space, with a message of looking beyond what we see at face value in the everyday people and objects of our lives.”

"This is quite an honor for Andrew as all public and private high schools participated and the competition was strong," said Hendricken art teacher, John Costa. "There are some magnificent pieces on display and Andrew is privileged to have been selected for his outstanding work.”

All work is judged on students' imaginative and creative presentation as well as their artistic ability to complete the work successfully.

Winning artwork was displayed at the Rhode Island College Alex & Ani Hall Art Center through January 27, 2018.
