The six citywide council candidates appearing on the November ballot have been invited to participate in a forum sponsored by the Cranston Herald and hosted by the Cranston Central Library on Thursday, Oct. 18 at 6 p.m.

The forum will be held at the library with the candidates being asked submitted questions. The candidates running for School Committee and ward seats of City Council will have their forum on Thursday, Oct. 25 at 6:00 p.m. at Central Library.

Cranston residents are encouraged to submit any questions they have for any of the political candidates in this year’s election, which will be edited by Herald staff and used during the forums, which will be moderated by reporter Pam Schiff. Candidates for Citywide Council seats are: current Citywide representatives Republican Michael Farina and Republican Ken Hopkins, and newcomer Amy Ricci. The Democratic candidates are: Ward 1 incumbent representative Steve Stycos, former Ward 1 representative Sarah Lee, and newcomer Gail Harvey.

In Ward 1, Chistopher Sparks is the Republican candidate for City Council while Lammis Vargas, who won a primary over Jeff Gale, will represent the Democratic party.

Ward 2 Democrat Paul McAuley is running unopposed and has already retained his seat as the Councilman.

Ward 3 has two newcomers in Democratic candidate John Donegan and Republican Derek Tutt.

Ward 4 is a race between acting Councilman Edward Brady, a Republican, and Democrat Tom Cappalli.

Chris Paplauskas, the Republican incumbent in Ward 5, is running unopposed.

In Ward 6, incumbent Republican Michael Favicchio will face off with Democrat Stephen Tranghese, a new candidate.

For School Committee, Michael Baer and Sara Tindall-Woodman are squaring off to fill the seat in Ward 1, and Ward 3 has incumbent Domenic Fusco going against term-limited City Councilman Paul Archetto.

The other School Committee members are running unopposed and include: Stephanie Culhane in Ward 2, Vincent Turchetta in Ward 4, Janice Ruggieri in Ward 5, Daniel Wall in Ward 6, and Michael Traficante, citywide member.

Submitted questions will take precedent over those turned in at the forum. Candidates will answer questions but will not be engaging in debates of the issues.
