Historical figures on full display at Edgewood Highland School

HELEN KELLER: Natalia Fanini learned about Helen Keller for her research project and was surprised to find out that Keller attended college, a fact she didn’t know previously.

BARACK OBAMA: Achilles Sem learned about former president Barack Obama and was surprised to learn that he had two children and was born in Honolulu in 1961.

OPRAH WINFREY: Through her research of Oprah Winfrey, Leasia Green learned that the star has five dogs. Green said that perfecting her likeness of Winfrey as a soda bottle took five tries.

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR: Ziyue Wang studied the life and times of civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. and learned that he had four children and he was shot on his hotel room balcony.

RUBY BRIDGES: It was Ruby Bridges’ speaking out to the world about her experiences as the first child to attend a previously all-white school that proved to be most inspirational to Samuel Derisier during his research. “She spoke out for all the kids who couldn’t speak out in 1954,” he said. “She did that to inspire all the kids to speak out in the world.”

Students at Edgewood Highland Elementary School recently shared with their peers what they had learned as they explored biographies. The all-purpose room was host to a wide array of biography projects from tri-fold boards to dioramas to soda bottle projects and posters as classes of students circulated through. The display was a culmination of their research on significant historical figures.
