The Immaculate Conception Saints captured two titles over the weekend, as their 5th/6th grade and middle school teams each won the state championship for their respective divisions.

The Saints’ 5th/6th grade team, which is coached by Guy Dufault and Paul McGloin, edged St. Philomena’s of Portsmouth, 28-22, to capture the Junior Division I Catholic Athletic League state title. Both teams were previously undefeated coming into the championship game.

After falling in a 17-10 hole, the Saints answered with an 18-5 run over the final eight minutes of the game to secure the win.

The Saints were led offensively by Mike Capraro, Rozellio Jones and Connor Kennedy, who scored eight points apiece.

The Saints also had a stifling defense led by Alex Marot, Evan Posey, Brennan Mellor, Brady McGloin, Elijah Nyakhoon, Bobby Schattle, Gus Single and Joe Fusco.

The Saints will now represent Rhode Island in the New England Catholic Athletic League Championships in Worcester, Mass from March 27-29.

The middle school team earned the state crown in the Boys’ Grammar Division on Sunday at Bishop Hendricken High School, defeating Monsignor Clarke School of Wakefield, 41-38.

The Saints, who were coached by Dave Maccarone, Chris Hattoy and Yemi Akinsinde, last won the grammar state championship back in 2006-2007, when the school was known as the Cranston/Johnston Catholic Regional School.

To get to the championship game, the Saints defeated St. Joseph of West Warwick in the quarterfinal round and then Mercymount of Cumberland in the semifinal round.

The Saints will now travel to the New England Regional Tournament at the end of March, where they will face teams from New Hampshire, Connecticut, Vermont and Massachusetts to see who is the best in the region.
