In favor of expanding Alzheimer's care coverage

Posted

To the Editor:

Many individuals in Rhode Island – more than 23,000 – have Alzheimer's disease. Some of them are under 65 years old and have Younger-Onset. As traditionally certain elderly home community care services are eligible for those over 65, two new bills would work to expand them to help those with Younger-Onset.

House Bill 5566, sponsored by Rep. Joseph Solomon of Warwick, and Senate Bill 280, sponsored by Walter Felag of Warren, would help provide those needed services if enacted. This law helps families keep people out of nursing homes and depleting their resources. The Division of Elderly Affairs Co-pay program helps provide home care or adult day services or both. Expanding this to those with Alzheimer's that are not currently eligible is a great first step in addressing a pertinent need in this state that will only grow.

We urge support for these bills and hope the General Assembly makes it a priority to champion this legislation this session.
