James Patrick Roque, a native of Cranston, RI, and a graduate of the College of the Holy Cross, Class of 1977, passed away on Thursday, September 27, 2018. A funeral mass will be held for Jim at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 6, 2018, at Saint Martha Catholic Church located at 200 N. Orange Ave., Sarasota, Florida.

Jim was Vice President, Client Advisor, with SunTrust Private Wealth Management in Sarasota, FL, where he resided at the time of his death. Jim began his financial career with First Union/Wachovia Bank, moved to TD Bank and joined SunTrust in 2014. Actively involved in the city he loved, Jim served on the boards of the Asolo Repertory Theater, Ringling College Library Association, Save our Seabirds, South Florida Museum and Tidewell Hospice. He was an active member of the Bird Key Yacht Club, Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast, Ringling Museum, Sarasota Tiger Bay Club and a strong supporter of the West Coast Black Theater Troupe and many other groups throughout Sarasota. One of Jim’s great passions was traveling the world with his beloved wife, Carla. During their nearly 30 years together, they visited six continents.

Jim is survived by his wife, Carla Malachowski of Sarasota, FL, his parents, Warren and Elizabeth Roque of Cranston, RI, brothers: W. Edward Roque and his wife, Patricia of Plainville, MA, Paul Roque and his wife Joanne of South Attleboro, MA, Timothy Roque and his wife Patti of North Andover, MA, along with his cherished uncle, Most Reverend Francis X. Roque of Pawtucket, RI, his wife’s parents, Carl and Jeannette Malachowski of Sarasota, FL, and many nieces and nephews.

An ever smiling and welcoming friend, Jim’s warmth and personality filled every room he entered. His intrinsic abilities of introducing and blending people for business, civic or social situations created a constellation of lasting friends and relationships whose origin was Jim’s love for Sarasota and her people. A man who prized his innumerable friends, Jim is cherished and remembered for his laughter and contagious happiness, his smile and his network of accomplishments and relationships that touched so many areas of Sarasota and live on in his honor. Jim has said he was grateful that Sarasota gave so much to him; he gave so much to us in return. He will always be remembered in the hearts of so many people everywhere.

In lieu of flowers, a donation in Jim’s name can be made to any of his favorite charities listed above as a way of helping Jim continue to spread happiness and contribute to the betterment of the city and the people he loved.
