West edges East Providence
The Cranston West football team outlasted East Providence in a Division I-A matchup on Saturday afternoon, as the Falcons improved to 3-1 in league play with a 20-14 edging of the Townies.
Senior quarterback Nick Dionizio tossed a pair of touchdown passes in the win, one to Garrett Jackman and one to Matt Carvalho, and Jeff Wardle scored on a kickoff return to narrowly propel West past East Providence.
The two teams went into halftime tied at 7, with a Dionizio-to-Jackman 11-yard touchdown pass accounting for West’s lone score over the first two quarters. Conversely, East Providence got a touchdown run from Dion Hazard, his first of two touchdowns in the game, during the first quarter.
Wardle pushed West in front with a 70-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the third quarter, and a Carvalho extra point gave the Falcons a 14-7 lead.
East Providence and West then traded scores in the fourth quarter, as Hazard got loose for a 31-yard scamper to pay dirt, but Dionizio connected with Carvalho for the game-winning touchdown from nine yards out to give the Falcons the one-score victory.
The win kept West in sole possession of third place in Division I-A behind unbeaten Hendricken and Portsmouth.
West will be back in action when it hosts Woonsocket (2-2) at Cranston Stadium on Friday evening at 7 p.m.
