Lombardo presents legislative grants to support baseball, softball leagues

State Sen. Frank Lombardo III of Johnston gave two rather impressive welcomes during last weekend’s Little League opening days.

Lombardo wished children who play in the boys’ baseball program and girls’ softball league well, and encouraged each and every member to play with sportsmanship and grace, win or lose.

Lombardo summoned presidents Ed Bedrosian and Lisa Calabro just off the infields inside Johnston War Memorial Park and presented two envelopes that will have as much impact as a grand slam.

Inside each envelope was a check for $1,000 – one for the baseball program, one for the softball program – to assist with operating expenses.

“They’re called Rhode Island legislative grants,” Lombardo said. “We in the legislature feel these grants are important and sometimes vital.”

Bedrosian and Calabro thanked Lombardo for his efforts on behalf of the leagues.

“Sen. Lombardo is always willing to help all our kids,” said Bedrosian, who began his 11th year as Johnston Little League president. “It seems as though whenever there’s a need, Frank is there. We again thank him for his ongoing help.”

Lombardo presented the little league’s check to Joey Acciardo Jr., son of Johnston High School football coach Joe Acciardo, who manages the Red Sox entry in the boys’ baseball league.

Lombardo presented Calabro with a check for the Johnston Little League Girls Softball program, as Victoria Marchesi and Tori Viau looked on.

“I’m honored to be in a position to help the youth of our town,” Lombardo said. “It’s always a special time when we can provide special funding for our town’s sports programs.”
