The Lull Before the Storm

Hollywood takes a break every year at this time, as movie-goers skip the theatres to do their Christmas shopping, and movie distributors plan for the release of their big films during the holidays in time to qualify for the Academy Awards. Now is a good time to catch up on a few serious contenders, including our favorite, “Green Book,” plus ”Bohemian Rhapsody," “A Star is Born” and “Widows,” which we rated as some of the best of 2018.

If you enjoy Christmas movies, “The Grinch” and “The Nutcracker” are still around, along with the return of “Elf,” “Daddy’s Home 2” and “Home Alone.”

Opening this week is “The Possession of Hannah Grace,” which won’t exactly put you in the holiday mood. (We’ll skip that one).

Interesting movies opening for the holidays and school vacations include “Aquaman,” a cartoon version of Spider-Man, “Bumblebee,” “Mary Poppins Returns,” “Mary Queen of Scots,” “Ben is Back,” “The Mule,” “Merwen” and “Vice.” We’ll be reviewing all of them in the coming weeks.

Check out the Avon, which is bringing in “The Favourite” for the holidays. You don’t have to worry about parking meters between now and Christmas. They are free.

A big “thanks” to John Pannozzi, who helps us by reviewing many of the Marvel and comic book-related movies. John is very knowledgeable and even has his own website. (Go to John P.’s blog).
