A gang member arrested in Cranston in July 2018 has been sentenced to more than two years in prison on a federal firearms charge, according to the office of U.S. Attorney Aaron L. Weisman.

Anthony Washburn, 33, of Providence was sentenced April 5 in U.S. District Court after pleading guilty to one count of being a felon of possession of a firearm in January. He was additionally ordered to serve three years of supervised release following his prison term.

According to Weisman’s office, Washburn – who is said to be a member of the Hanover Boyz street gang – was arrested by Cranston Police during a traffic stop and found to be in possession of a loaded, .40-caliber, semi-automatic firearm and a stamp collection that had been reported stolen from a Cranston home.

Washburn had previously been convicted in Rhode Island state court on firearm and drug trafficking charges, according to prosecutors.

The case was investigated and prosecuted by Project Safe Neighborhoods, a collaborative effort among local, state and federal law enforcement focused on the prosecution of violent crime.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Zechariah Chafee prosecuted the case with assistance from Assistant U.S. Attorney Terrence P. Donnelly. Weisman’s office also acknowledged the contributions of the FBI and the FBI Safe Street Task Force.
