At the movies

With only a terrible teen horror flick opening this weekend, we've got a week off.

We watched the Golden Globes even though we don't care for award shows, believing that great performances should be awarded on their own merit.

Taking a look at the few good movies still playing on Rhode Island screens, we recommend going to the Avon for a double feature (separate admission) of Parasite and Jo Jo Rabbit, two off-beat films that we enjoyed this past year.

The Showcase has a few good leftovers scattered among the duds, including A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood starring Tom Hanks as Fred Rogers. One of our favorites was Richard Jewell, about the security guard in Atlanta who was blamed for the Centennial Park bombings. Send the young ones off to Frozen II or go see Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, but by all means avoid CATS.

If you can take the violence and profanity, Adam Sandler gives an out-of-character performance in the role of an addicted gambler in Uncut Gems. Little Women, Knives Out and Bombshell are worth watching.

Until next week, when 1917 looks like a must-see and they bring back a few Golden Globe winners.
