Naval War College curls in Cranston

Students and faculty from the U.S. Naval War College were joined by Mayor Allan Fung for the “President Cup’s Curling Competition” at the Cranston Veterans Memorial Ice Rink Sunday afternoon.

The intramural event was organized by the Matt Halton, a student at the Naval War College, with help from the Ocean State Curling Club, as part of the year-round President’s Cup. Members of the Ocean State Curling Club gave the participants a half-hour lesson on different forms and techniques for sweeping the ice and ways to send the stone down the ice before the contest went underway.

The President’s Cup, according to Halton, is a friendly competition amongst the Students and Faculty of the college. There are teams comprised of faculty and staff, as well as teams from the junior and senior classes. The Cup is held throughout the year in three different phases, there is a fall, winter and spring version, and the points from each are tallied up at the end of the year.

“[The Cup] is about getting out in the community and getting to know each other as students and peers,” Halton said. “If you have a sport that you want to present to the student body you can volunteer to be one of coordinators and arrange the game.”

Dan Kuester, a public affairs officer with the Naval Warfare College, said the Cup is comprised of different events every year but, “this is the first year they’re doing curling and we’re very excited about it.”

Halton was inspired to make curling the spring event for the Cup after he and his wife attended a “Learn to Curl Night” earlier this year. The Ocean State Curling Club hosts “Learn to Curl Nights” throughout the fall and winter seasons as a way to promote the curling community.

The club is a non-profit, organization that hopes to promote the awareness and community of curlers in the state. They aspire to “build a strong community through the sport of curling by providing a welcoming environment for athletes of all ages and skill levels, creating the opportunity to improve skills while having fun,” according to their website.

The Naval War College invited Mayor Fung to attend their curling competition since they would “be in the neighborhood,” Halton explained. Fung accepted the students’ invitation and joined them at the Veterans Memorial Ice Rink where he played a few rounds as a member of a team.

“[Curling] is something fun that I saw in the Olympics before and was always interesting in trying it,” Fung said. “I’m glad the opportunity came up today.”

Janet Prichard, the President of the Ocean State Curling Club, hopes to work with the city of Cranston to find ways to increase their club membership. Fung responded positively to the potential partnership. “Talking to the club, hopefully in the future we can do a ‘Cranston Day’ and really get a lot more interest in the sport,” Fung said.

With the 2018 Winter Olympics less than a year away the Ocean State Curling Club is inviting anyone with newfound curling curiosity to attend a learn to curl night in the Fall or check out their website at www.oceanstatecurling.org.
