New Hope Gallery to celebrate ninth anniversary as part of Summer Show

The New Hope Art Gallery’s Summer Show – doubling as a celebration of the gallery’s ninth anniversary – is scheduled to open July 30 from 4-7:30 p.m.

“We are excited to be celebrating nine years of this wonderful nonprofit art gallery that brings art to all people and all people to art,” director and curator Ricky Gagnon said.

The gallery has been located in the Cranston Enrichment Center at 1070 Cranston St. for four years. It was previously located at the Rhode Island Training School in Cranston.

“We started the gallery as a DCYF volunteer program bringing art to at-risk youth in the care of the state,” Gagnon said. “Our move to the center allowed us to expand our mission out into the senior community by encouraging senior artists to participate in our shows along with local, national, special needs and student artists we had been showing. We are a unique gallery that shows all artists side by side to inspire each other.”

The New Hope Art Gallery is open to artists of all skill levels, and has had new artists in every show.

The summer show is no exception, with new artists from UCP Adaptive Arts and Oasis Wellness and Recovery RI programs being featured along with many returning artists.

New Hope is a large, second-floor gallery space that features 400 pieces of 2D and 3D art in most styles and media, including ceramic, digital, drawing, fabric, glass, mixed media, painting, photography and sculpture.

“As someone who felt I was drowning in a sea of exclusivity, New Hope Art Gallery was warm and inviting, a wonderful place for an artist to express themselves," said artist Kelly Starspangled Brown, who is one of the co-founders of Community x Magazine along with Lizzie Devlyn.

The show will also feature 12 vendor tables of small original art items, prints and cards by participating artists. All art is available for sale at affordable prices.

“Come enjoy a fun night of beautiful art, great music by Jim Chapin, Mark Greenwood and Bob Ruzzo, free portrait drawings by Jack Lai, and good food,” Gagnon said of the July 30 opening.

Artist Lin Collette is an established collage artist who creates imaginative and humorous collage and has shown with New Hope for almost nine years.

“Showing my art at New Hope has been such a positive and fun experience. Ricky, Barbara and David love their artists and I love them,” she said.

Assistant curator David Koukol is a talented artist who creates amazing pencil drawings. He is an important part of the gallery’s volunteer staff along with the other assistant curator, Barbara Rosenbaum.

“Our nonprofit gallery is one of the largest galleries in the state that is open to all artists from beginner to established to show their art in a non-juried format,” Koukol said.

Artists are welcome to participate in all of the gallery’s rotating shows. Each show runs for three months and the curators and art gallery staff spend about three weeks setting up a new show.

Artist Ashton Acciari is a creative young artist who works in many style and media and creates all of the gallery’s invitation images.

“Showing at New Hope Art Gallery is great and I enjoy being part of a larger community. New Hope Art Gallery allows me to express myself and meet other people while growing as an artist. I am thankful to be part of such an artistic community,” Acciari said.

The Summer Show will run until Oct. 25. Regular gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except holidays.
