Studies have shown seniors with hearing loss are significantly more likely to develop dementia over time than those who retain their hearing. Why is this? What can we do about it?

Diabetes Support Group: Food is Medicine

Mary Flynn, a Brown University researcher and a nutritionist at Miriam Hospital, is back with us to discuss the importance of healthy eating and cooking. She will discuss a plant-based and olive oil diet along with the Mediterranean diet.

The five areas of wellness will be discussed – physical, intellectual, emotional, spiritual, and occupational as well as what these elements of holistic wellness mean to different people.

Chronic Disease Self-Management Program: Tools for Healthy Living

This is a free, six-session program for people with one or more chronic conditions, such as asthma, diabetes, pain, arthritis or heart disease. Topics addressed include dealing with frustration, isolation, pain and fatigue; exercises for improving flexibility and strength; medications and nutrition; and new treatments.

Everyone receives a workbook, and upon successfully completing the program, participants will receive a relaxation CD and a gift certificate. Space is limited. Register by calling 780-6000.

RSVP caregiver volunteers

The Retired Senior Volunteer Program, or RSVP,

is looking for volunteers to provide the following services for homebound seniors in the community: respite services for a homebound senior’s caregiver; companionship to homebound seniors; run errands for homebound seniors; transport homebound seniors to their medical appointments. If you are interested in becoming an RSVP caregiver volunteer, call Karen at 780-6159 for an interview. You must be 55 years of age or older to volunteer and a BCI is required.

Step Up Challenge

Sponsor: Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode IslandThe Cranston Enrichment Center will be challenging other senior centers in the area. We will be competing against Coventry Senior Center, Pilgrim Senior Center and West Warwick Senior Center. The Step Up Challenge runs from Sept. 3-30. The center with the highest average steps over four weeks will receive $2,500 from BCBSRI. The top three winners at each center will also receive prizes.

To join the challenge, you must be a participant at the center and 55 years of age or older. Each person will receive a fitness tracker or a pedometer to record daily steps. Participants will report daily numbers on a weekly basis.
