Palmer finishes strong

The curtain has fallen on Cranston native Billy Palmer’s career between the pipes at Stonehill, but not before he took a scalpel to the record books of the Skyhawk hockey program and the Northeast-10 Conference.

The Hendricken graduate and former Boston Bandit earned his place in the annals on February 6 on the heels of a 57-save tour de force that earned Stonehill a 3-2 victory over Saint Michael’s which snapped a three-game losing streak.

It marked a new career-best for Palmer, but more importantly, it enabled him to leapfrog Skyhawk goaltending coach Tyler Holske into first place on the all-time NE-10 saves chart, who made 2,489 stops during his career at Southern New Hampshire.

When all was said and done, the ex-Hawk concluded his career with 2,560 saves, with 523 of them coming this season while also splitting duties alongside three other netminders.

Despite sharing the load, Palmer was still the undisputed primary goaltender this season, starting 17 of Stonehill’s 26 contests and recording a .900 save percentage and a 3.56 goals against average while picking up a shutout on November 27 versus Post.

Unfortunately for the Skyhawks, the 2018-19 season finished with a thud as they dropped their final four contests of the campaign to end the year with an 8-17-1 record.

Their slate concluded last month via a 6-5 setback to Bryn Athyn in which Palmer suited up for Stonehill for the final time, notching 13 saves in the losing effort.
