On International Walk to School Day on Oct. 4, Oak Lawn Elementary School, along with the Parent Teacher Group (PTG), hosted a walk with Cranston Police student resource officers Matt Davis and Derek Dimeo, who took part in the annual stroll to school stressing pedestrian and bike safety to the kids and the parents.

National Walk to School Day is observed annually on the first Wednesday in October. This is a day to get out and get some exercise while enjoying the weather.

The event was organized by PTG President Ruthanne Farina. Farina stated she organized the event in order to get the community more involved with the school.

International Walk to School Day is a global event that involves communities from more than 40 countries walking and biking to school on the same day. It began in 1997 as a one-day event. Over time, this event has become part of a movement for year-round safe routes to school and a celebration with record-breaking participation each October.

International Walk to School Month gives children, parents, schoolteachers and community leaders an opportunity to be part of a global event as they celebrate the many benefits of walking. Walkers from around the world walk to school together for various reasons; all hoping to create communities that are safe places to walk.
