Oaklawn Elementary students collect thousands of items for annual food drive

Continuing their tradition of giving back to their community, Oaklawn Elementary School is donating 1,689 food items to the Comprehensive Community Action Program (CCAP).

For the fifth year in a row, they have participated in the Feinstein Holiday Food Drive to fight hunger.

"Students in K-5, and their families were asked to consider bringing in non-perishable food items so others, less fortunate, may have a bountiful Thanksgiving and Christmas," said principal James Zanfini. "To make this drive fun, our 5th grade Student Council collected, tallied and reported out on the amount of food items collected each day. In the end, the class that brought in the most items would have the opportunity to choose a special class reward."

For this year, the winning class was Mary-Ellen Russell's first grade, with 269 items. In all, the school brought in a record 1,689 items, which will be donated to CCAP.

According to Zanfini, Mr. Feinstein rewards the school with one dollar per food item, up to one thousand dollars.

"Monies will be used for instructional programming purposes as well as further help those in need," he said. "Oaklawn's Feinstein Junior Scholars are committed to making the world a better place one good deed at a time."

On the last day of the food drive, students and faculty members wore something orange to show they took part in the fight against hunger.
